I think it's irresponsible not to reflect on what that idea is.
Military uniforms are particularly charged in this way - and I don't think it's impossible to use that imagery very effectively. But the responsibility is higher because of the weight that history imbues that imagery with.

The alternative is to say that history doesn't matter either, I suppose. Arbitrary choices bare of meaning, thrown together with contextless aesthetics is a bold thought experiment, but one that would preclude drawing on that imagery in the first place.
