I swear, this science fiction novella by the Strugatskys gives off the same nervous energy as Uncut Gems. Constant high pressure situations barely understood by poor Malianov, and the reader's not much wiser. Alternately laughing out loud and trying to calm my heart.

Bonus post! I mustn't neglect to mention the presence of force of nature James Patrick Kelly as "mentor of mentors"! He held a terrific lecture (mirrorshades and all) on the origins of cyberpunk, the genre he helped create back in the day, and we got a real kick out of that! 6/6

I tried spending as much time as possible both with the other international writers, such as Leonardo Espinoza Benavides from Chile here, as well as our Chinese colleages. Trying to stuff as many hot pot lunches and dinner conversations in there as possible! 4/?

The workshop itself, organized by the Fishing Fortress SF College at the Chongqing College for Mobile Communication, took place on a huge, hilly, green campus. It was challenging and fun to work with the two dozen students for seven days straight; mornings, afternoons and evenings.
