The Bus Stop itself was a hundred-foot clearing trimmed by strange shadows and ancient trees. Shoved far to the left, just before the tilt of a neck-breaking plummet, the flashlight whipped across a school bus speared by a massive fir trunk, its windows carpeted by needle-covered towels where the glass had long been busted through. Its rear headlights were crushed into the fender of an artifacted Chevy stepside truck that lived decades before Midge had been born—draped similarly in dry-rotted rugs and quilts, its bed stuffed with firewood and crumpled magazines that glinted under flashlight glow. They must've been young when they found and gilded this place; only children would attempt to keep the inanimate warm.

Then their breath fish-hooked my bottom lip, moody with cinnamon gum and nicotine, and they pressed their open mouth against mine. Whatever proboscis creature had been growing in my unsettled stomach hurtled forward and took a chunk out of me. Sank its teeth into my plush throat and ripped, dribbling air into Elowen’s eager mouth.
