And this pattern is growing. Their budget ignored the ongoing genocide of Indigenous women, girls and diverse gendered folks, neglected sexual and reproductive health care, offered nothing to secure pharmacare agreements, cut health funding for refugees, and pushed border legislation that women’s organizations warn will undermine privacy and safety around reproductive care. If we abandon fundamental human rights abroad, we invite the erosion of those rights at home. The Liberals must reverse course and uphold these rights unequivocally. This is not a simple shift in tone. It tells governments that violate the rights of women and gender-diverse people that Canada no longer expects meaningful progress in exchange for diplomatic favour. In pursuit of deals at any cost, the Liberals are abandoning the principles people across Canada expect us to defend.

Women in the UAE face laws that restrict their autonomy, limit decision-making for their children, and criminalize actions that disproportionately punish them. Gender-diverse and 2SLGBTQIA+ people are targeted through vague, sweeping laws that criminalize identity, relationships, and advocacy. These are clear human rights abuses—yet Carney is signalling they’re no barrier to trading partnerships.

It is staggering that on the eve of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Prime Minister Carney is cozying up to the UAE and diluting Canada’s commitments to gender equality on the world stage. The G20 Summit in Johannesburg should have been a moment for Canada to reaffirm human rights as the backbone of our foreign policy. Instead, Carney signalled a retreat, telling reporters he “wouldn’t describe our foreign policy as feminist,” even as he aligns himself with a state long known for systemic human rights violations.
