I refuse to let hopelessness prevail. This may just be one essay, by a lawyer few have heard of, in a newsletter read by a fraction of the public. But I will not stay silent.

Will you?

First, SCOTUS issued a sweeping grant of immunity to a president who committed unprecedented crimes in office

Now they have prevented courts from stopping this administration's open and routine violations of the law

Democracy and the rule of law are on the line

This is not hard. Every Republican member of Congress should join Democrats in condemning this administration’s vicious arrest of Sen Padilla. “A Republic if you can keep it” is now.

Hey NY Times--

It is still a "fringe theory" -- every court has rejected it.

There is still a "broad consensus" -- John Eastman is a disgraced lawyer under indictment.

The only thing that has changed is the Times.

Again, today would be an excellent day for Ivy League, Big Ten, & all the other chancellors & university presidents to start speaking loudly & collectively against the all-out existential crisis that this assault on US higher ed represents. The silence is deafening.

I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

Donald Trump stood in front of Congress tonight and reinforced what we already knew: He’s a corrupt megalomaniac lunatic who is running our country to the ground. These are not normal times. Everything is not fine. We are in crisis.

While university presidents are huddling w/ teams of communications consultants and lawyers, carefully crafting statements to respond to the attack on science, the Trump administration is making massive, rapid-fire moves. An asymmetrical battlefield, where consequences only flow one way.

This.
This is why every political scientist you know has been in a state of panic for the past week. This isn't about policy disagreement, it's about the Constitution being destroyed before our very eyes.
My depressing thought for the day: it seems increasingly inevitable that quite soon, Trump decides to simply disregard a court finding that some of his actions are illegal or unconstitutional. Impeachment is attempted & fails thanks to loyal Republicans. At which point there are no good options.

If Congress had a constitutional spine, Donald Trump would face strong charges of impeachable abuses of power. As matters stand today, that check on executive power has been temporarily rendered impotent.

Couldn’t agree more. So many things are a 5-alarm fire right now. The word “unconstitutional” doesn’t even begin to cover what has happened in the last two weeks.
This language describes a coup. You have to be a government employee, subject to the rules & procedures that bind gov employees, to do this kind of work. This is a blatant abuse of the public trust by the Trump administration, a true 5-alarm fire. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...
