Under the thinly-veiled guise of Title IX violations, they’re following the same playbook that other OC school districts have used. (San Juan Cap USD comes to mind.) There isn’t one known trans or gender-non-conforming athlete in TUSD, yet suddenly there’s an urgent drive to “save girls sports” — or so the opposition says. Part 1 of 3. Reflections on the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps, Veterans Day, and my time in the service. Yesterday was the Marine Corps' 250th Birthday. I've been celebrating it every year since 1984. That was the year the 17 year old me, 'celebrated' at Boot Camp with a piece of birthday cake, the Marine Corps Hymn and a lot of "incentive physical training." Some years I got to live it up, like the year in 1997 when my unit held our birthday ball at the Rio Yacht Club on Ipanema Beach. Other years, I was aboard ship or shivering on the side of a Mountain. Part 2 of 3. This year, like many others, I celebrated with my family, a steak dinner, a piece of cake and a hearty singing of the hymn. I've never made the Birthday or my service a partisan issue but in this troubled time in our nation I will say that everything I've done for the past 10 years to resist MAGA extremism and protect our democratic freedoms has been motivated by my oath and the values I learned as a young Marine. It’s a very hard thing for military people, especially Marines, to do their duty by disobeying unlawful orders but we are arriving at that point when many will have to. The deployment of 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines on to the streets of Los Angeles last June was a hard pill to swallow but I'm told that at least one regimental commander refused to deploy their unit to LA. I’m confident that no matter how socially conservative the Corps may trend, that Marines will always stay loyal to their oath, the constitution and the American people. So I’m not just celebrating John Basilone and Chesty Puller this Veteran’s Day, but I’m celebrating a Corps that to its core, will always defend our democracy. Semper Fi! Foto 1 de 3. Reflexiones sobre los 250 años del Cuerpo de Marines, el Día de los Veteranos, y mi tiempo en el servicio. Ayer la Marina cumplió 250 años. Lo vengo celebrando desde 1984. Ese año, cuando tenía 17, 'celebré' en el entrenamiento básico con un pedazo de pastel, el himno de la Marina y un montón de ejercicio físico como castigo. Unos años celebré a lo grande, como en 1997 cuando mi unidad hizo el baile en el Rio Yacht Club en Ipanema. Otros años estaba en un barco o muriéndome de frío en una montaña. Foto 2 de 3. Este año, igual que otros, celebré con mi familia, bistec, pastel y cantamos el himno bien fuerte. Nunca hice del cumpleaños o mi servicio algo político pero en estos tiempos difíciles voy a decir que todo lo que he hecho los últimos 10 años contra el extremismo MAGA y para proteger nuestras libertades democráticas viene de mi juramento y los valores que aprendí de joven Marine. Es bien difícil para los militares, sobre todo Marines, hacer su deber desobedeciendo órdenes ilegales pero ya estamos llegando al punto donde muchos van a tener que hacerlo. Que pusieran al 2do Batallón, 7mos Marines en las calles de Los Ángeles en junio fue bien duro pero me dicen que al menos un comandante se negó a mandar su unidad a LA. Foto 3 de 3. Estoy seguro que por más conservador que sea el Cuerpo, los Marines siempre van a ser leales a su juramento, la constitución y el pueblo. This lawsuit is just one piece of the ongoing fight back against a coordinated political assault on our community.
