I’ve always wanted to use the word littoral literally, and in the chapter I’m revising today I just did. We all have to get our pleasures when we can, especially in these terrible times, eh? 🗃️✍🏻

I just *found* the one friend of #OliverSacks from his school days whom no one has ever interviewed bc “he just disappeared”—and he emailed me immediately, offered to transcribe or scan the letters he has from Sacks (that are not in Sacks’ archive) & is willing to Zoom w/me. PS he’s 90 years old! 🗃️✍🏻

🙏🏻Thanks for putting together my book with Vermeer & the Delft School, which is not only fantastic on its own but was an important source for me while writing Eye of the Beholder!!!
Another perfect combination:

Laura J. Snyder's ( @laurajsnyder.bsky.social ) fantastic book "Eye of the Beholder. Johannes Vermeer, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, and the Reinvention of Seeing".

And the MET's "Vermeer and the Delft School"

Ghosts & goblins, we are ready for you! Can’t open the door & breathe your maskless air, sadly, but you’ll be happy with all the spooooky stuff in your bags!

I have spent a ridiculous number of days searching for the unmarried surname of #OliverSacks’ maternal grandfather’s 1st wife (his mother was a child of the 2nd wife). Why? It just annoyed me that, like so many women in history, her name was lost, unknown even by her descendants. I JUST FOUND IT!! 🗃️

I just discovered that 2 of my books were used—w/o my consent & w/no payment—to train AI programs hoping to make authors superfluous. Read this article & sign the petition against such unfair usage. The article has a link to search if your work was used (a class action suit has been filed). 😤
If you recently learned that your book (or books) were used without your knowledge or consent to train AI, here's what you can do next, according to the Authors Guild (which has already filed a class action suit against OpenAI, representing more than a dozen writers)
You Just Found Out Your Book Was Used to Train AI. Now What? - The Authors Guild
If you’re an author, you may have recently discovered that your published book was included in a dataset of books used to train artificial intelligence systems without your permission. (Search the...

Now signing off for two weeks to make brisket, celebrate the Jewish holidays (L’shanah tovah to others who celebrate) and send my son off to college. Hopefully squeeze in a little work too. See you again in October!

My most recent published work was the cover story for the summer issue of The American Scholar to mark the 300th anniversary of the death of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the discoverer of microscopic life.

Hi everyone! I’m here for interesting history of science, intellectual, cultural, & art history, etc., but will only be dropping by as my enormous Oliver Sacks WIP allows.
