Today's #UnrulyRenaissance tidbit: In the late fifteenth century, Isabella d'Este employed a buffoon at her court that went by the stage name "Frittella" (Pancake). His real name was Giovan Francesco dei Corioni.

Dear friends in Boccaccio, Italian Studies and PCRS, would anyone be interested in putting together a panel on Boccaccio and race for this conference? #medievalsky

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a manel at a conference, workshop, or symposium in Italian Studies, I would likely have enough funding to organize a two-day conference on the persistence of manels in Italian Studies, inclusive of sumptuous meals for all participants.

TIL about Pietro da Rombulo, a merchant from 15th-century Sicily who traveled to Ethiopia, India & China. In 1450, Rombulo was a diplomat on a historic visit of Ethiopian ambassadors to Italy. We only know about him because humanist Pietro Ranzano interviewed him in Naples. #medievalsky#skystorians

I'm writing about Petrarch's reception in Counter-Reformation Italy for #FraudulentMuse. In this 1538 edition of the Rime, a later hand expurgated the sonnet "L'avara Babilonia ha colmo il sacco" (The greed of Babylon has so filled the sack), where Petrarch cursed the Avignon papacy. #earlymodern

In many languages, the words used to describe individuals who care about culture are inescapably patriarchal in nature—especially in English, where both men and women are identified as "patrons" and celebrated for their "patronage" of the arts. #earlymodern#arthistory

I went to a second-hand book sale at my university yesterday and found this copy of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. It appears that the previous owner had Very Strong Opinions about it.

This poster is in front of my office in the Italian Studies department at UofT, and every single time I walk past it, I can't help but think that this girl is rolling her eyes at us. #earlymodern #AcademicSky #UGHITALIANS

Exciting news: 1) We received such great abstracts that we're organizing *two* Queer Poetics panels at the next RSA meeting in Chicago, with papers on Boccaccio, Aretino, Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, Valeria Miani, and Elizabeth Polwhele. 2) Both panels are going to be sponsored by @CRRS_Toronto
