The last chapter of my dissertation, Consequences of dam removal for reservoir carbon storage and emissions, is finally out!

We modeled emissions and burial before, during, and after the removal of three focal dams to evaluate the net impact of removal on C balance. (1/5)

Excited to finally share our work evaluating prior efforts, publicly available data, and tools to evaluate the effects of agricultural conservation on water quality outcomes in the United States.

Our key recommendations are summarized in the graphic below.

Title: Advancing assessment of the impacts of agricultural conservation on water quality at regional and national scales. 1) Leverage existing agricultural conservation practices datasets by harmonizing reporting across programs. 2) Survey conservation practice implementation and maintenance after contract initiation, 3) Employ methods of data sharing that leverage information from individual records without infringing on privacy protections, 4) Develop studies of producer and macroeconomic behavior, 5) Separate practice efficacy assessments by nutrient (N vs. P) form (particulate vs. dissolved and species), and loss pathways, 6) Evaluate practice performance over time and over a range of environmental conditions, including climate factors, 7) Develop fit-for-purpose water quality data and strategically enhance existing water quality datasets, 8) Develop data on other water quality drivers, particularly nutrient inputs and legacies, and their representation in mechanistic models.

Spent the evening with 38 other nerds learning about how my local government works from highly competent and passionate town managers. The first of 14 sessions. An excellent salve for the torrent of bad news at the state and federal level.
