In Kutaisi, at the Georgian Dream office, they have a Bidzina Ivanishvili doll too, and Russian NAXUI written on it. Wonder if they'll burn it like at the Parliament yesterday. Bidzina is famously paranoid about curses and witchcraft, or anything similar to it. #GeorgiaProtests

For four consecutive day and night, protesters have filled streets across Georgia, including outside Tbilisi’s parliament. Despite crackdowns and arrests, they demand new elections and the restoration of Georgia’s European path, taken by a self-proclaimed pro-Russian regime. Video Tabula Media

According to @visionergeo.bsky.social yesterday’s anti-government demonstration in Tbilisi was one of the largest on record, with nearly 200,000 people attending. The high turnout made it a success, as protesters held their ground overnight for the first time despite dispersal attempts.

Thousands have gathered outside the Batumi City Court, where hearings are underway for protesters detained during recent demonstrations. The EU anthem is playing, while Georgian and EU flags are waving.

“Ideas outlast reality” (or, if you prefer: contradiction between base and superstructure) is, along with contingency, possibly the most important insight one gets from studying history.

It takes people a long time to understand the world they live in.
But coal as an idea — big, tough men (approaching Trump with tears in their eyes) has outlasted coal as a reality. West Virginia thinks it's a coal state, when in reality it's mostly a health care state (supported by Medicare and Medicaid, which the people it votes for want to cut) 4/

A new release of an 1891 song by Louis Vasnier deepens what we know about the genre’s origins.

You absolutely must read @sarahweinman.bsky.social’s excellent piece
In 2024, the remains of a teenage girl found in the basement of a Hell’s Kitchen basement were finally identified as 16-year-old Patricia McGlone. She’d been there since 1969, when the basement was a rock music club called Steve Paul’s The Scene.

I investigate her death & life for Rolling Stone:
Unraveling the 50-Year Mystery of the Body in the Basement
The Scene was the hottest club in New York. After it closed, a teen girl’s remains were discovered inside, leaving authorities with a puzzle to solve.

A great, if depressing, deep dive into food deserts, that concludes with an important point: what can be done can be undone, wrongs righted. We should get to it.
1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

They didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened.
