John Ball presented at the bi-annual linguistics conference at Kobe University in Japan.

There wealth of knowledge from linguist researchers and scientists studying the world's languages is a marvel. It also is what is missing from today's AI. Next generation language AI will be enabled by it.

The title is apt. The Leaderboard Illusion is one of the fundamental flawed assumption. If a technology incrementally 'improves' on a score of an irrelevant benchmark isn't that like building a taller ladder to the moon?
There's a new paper out that offers a 68 pages critique of the way the popular Chatbot Arena LLM leaderboard can potentially be gamed by large AI labs with deep pockets. Here's my attempt at adding some extra context to the issues described in the paper.

Understanding the recent criticism of the Chatbot Arena
The Chatbot Arena has become the go-to place for vibes-based evaluation of LLMs over the past two years. The project, originating at UC Berkeley, is home to a large community …

New adventures in #AIhype

"I suspect the real move here is simply, as it so often is, to hype the product — basically by saying, hey, look at how smart our product is, it’s so smart we need to give it rights." ~ @garymarcus.bsky.social

Safer, accurate and energy efficient technology exists when we look past today's generative AI to brain emulation of language and vision comprehension.

Cognitive scientist John Ball shows the world the benefits of that next generation tech.

My first post for a while because John Ball and I have been sharing the message out there to universities the value of emulating the brain for its language and vision comprehension.

Why is this so urgent now? The cracks forming for generative AI are wider than the Grand Canyon.....

Watching a kid learn to ride a bike. Always fascinating. Show me a humanoid robot able to spontaneously learn to control a machine like that, with minimal supervision and instruction and do it in a few hours. We don’t need fancy benchmarks to understand we are nowhere near AGI.

In a discussion where the author urges us (society) to 'all change' because AI will bring a new renaissance. I agree with the author that it can. For that renaissance the next generation of tools based on brain science are required so that we control the language interface with accuracy.
