There are a LOT of gryphon series. The first two that pop into my head based on your descriptors are The Summer King Chronicles and Gryphon Insurrection. If it isn't either of these, @/kvalenagle has a website with a page that is the 'Gryphon Reading List' which will almost certainly have it!

Also, most school laptops do not have a number pad to use for alt codes. Most teachers say to just use -- because of this. There's definitely a limit on how reasonable this is as an excuse, though. I've seen some of my classmates do -- when writing with pencil on paper, which is ridiculous.

The writing program my school uses for essays has automatic checking for things they consider cheating, like copy-pasting or alt-tabbing. Because of these detection systems, you can't do ANYTHING that requires pressing alt or ctrl without flagging your response as possibly being cheated.
