For My Students I walk into school each day Surrounded by laughter, friendship, and inspiration I see the world in each and every one of your eyes Sure, there’s the flip side, the chattering, the quick Glance down at your phone During a test that I must admonish The snide remarks I shut down when They glance past my ears The burdens of each secret told And the knowledge of what you have been through, the Hurts I wish I could stitch back up But it is worth it to me I’m not old, but I’m getting older And each day I learn something new, That I get to pass along And graciously, you listen to me prattle on about The importance of college, of self-esteem, and all the Scary things about life which I hope you learn To dodge and strike down Like a skilled and learned samurai I hope you learn to be artists, To be bold, creative, and free, to leave your mark on the world— Whether it is on the court, the field, In the boardroom, on the page, Whether it is the music you create Which fills the air and brings joy to each ear it touches And I hope you know that we are all in this building To learn from each other, to grow in kindness and love, To find family, peace and connection But mostly, to find ourselves K.C.B.

Bloodlines are not just heredity— But dynasties carried on The backs of women, clinging Like a sticky, sickly child, feverish And unwieldy. Perhaps more like Gobs of tissue or sinewy flesh— Blood clots that have been Passed in the night for Fear of the shame. I, too, hate the way I was made.
