pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

People keep "debunking" the claim that Charlie Kirk wanted to stone gay people to death but I'm pretty sure he meant it.

The reason Charlie Kirk is being lionized by so many journalists is simple: he was very good at cultivating journalists and it seems a lot of journalists don't seem to understand the concept of being cultivated as a pet reporter in exchange for scoops or leads. They think he was their friend.

It is quite simply dishonest to describe TPUSA as a “free speech” organization and not even mention the “Professor Watchlist,” as NPR just did. Reporting on a crime does not entail adopting the victim’s views.

Only one thing to add to today's news. The death penalty is not acceptable in any case, for anything.

The reason many of the commentators don’t like Bluesky is because the infrastructure is set up in a way that no longer benefits them.

On Twitter it was always easier to gain an audience by purposefully saying things that upset people. Getting ratio-ed was a tactic.

Here, that’s much harder.

economics not beating the “astrology for men” allegations with quotes like this
When your “superpower” as a country is self-delusion about upward mobility it enables the status quo. Because nobody is demanding substantive change if the majority believe they’re just temporarily embarrassed millionaires, as the saying goes.

Correct. Basically any "FinTech" you encounter is no different from a bookie, loan shark, etc. They're not banks and they're not regulated like banks.
Because some people haven't heard it yet: PAYPAL IS NOT A BANK, DO NOT LEAVE MORE THAN A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS SITTING IN YOUR ACCOUNT AT ANY TIME. MOVE IT TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY.

Paypal can and will close your account and steal all your money without warning. And have done MANY times.

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

I think this is wrong. The right isn't even really mad about "social trends." It just WANTS to be mad, and it has propped up an enormous media and communications infrastructure to give it things to be mad about it. The social trends are a means to an end; the end is feeling enraged and resentful.
Yup. As I’ve said before, the right’s constant sense of grievance even as they control every branch of government stems from the fact that the base doesn’t really want specific policy reforms. They’re angry about cultural trends the government can’t really do anything about in a free society.
This is a great example of how conservative grievances are with society overall rather than government. It’s not even like a teacher told her; another student did! The only way around it is to police society so much that no child anywhere could learn about lesbians from anywhere and tell their kid.

Look, I'm no political strategist, but I would think that the opinion of the guy whose entire role at the NYT was basically to promote the Republican point of view, isn't someone any Democrat should give a shit about.
For Republicans, “a Mamdani mayoralty would be the political gift that keeps on giving,” our columnist Bret Stephens writes about the New York mayoral race. “The state of the city would become a reflection of the Democratic Party writ large.”

Get ready for the G.O.P. to run against “Mamdani Democrats” for several election cycles to come.
