The brilliant scarlet filled the sky, enough that I couldn't capture all the light and its reflection with my lens. We could see it very clearly with the naked eye and it was wonderful!

They're both so amazing. It is awe inspiring, and also oddly makes me want to try playing around with photographing a plasma globe or something sometime. Maybe a Crookes tube would be fun.

bsky.app/profile/lacc... These are straight out of the camera. It'll be interesting to see if I can pull more out of the raw files.

I feel like I want to watch it all night! So glad I finally caught the show this time! Greater Boston.

This is the first time I've seen the northern lights, though like I said I couldn't see much without help.

I'm colorblind and they just looked like a smudge to my naked eyes. I wouldn't be sure I saw the northern lights without the camera.

Extremely so. People with actual hallucinations are something the AI people clearly have not dealt with or thought much about. And on top of that people with mental health problems are exceptionally vulnerable to the personal and social problems caused by LLMs. Insult added to injury.

That's a good explanation of almost every term the generative AI crowd uses. From artificial intelligence, to hallucinations, to temperature. There's so many 😵💫

I feel like something like closeups of baby birds over days is the kind of thing it is perfect for. You find a setup and position, the focusing situation is as manageable as it's likely to get, and you can plant and waste hours getting some fantastic photos without the parents getting upset.

Once in a while there's something I can only even attempt with the 500mm. And then I will attempt it and a lot of the time I will fail and occasionally I will do insane levels of prep and be incredibly pleased.

After all this discussion over the beast I should point out that outside of astrophotos I'm almost always going to go for my 300mm f4 or my 400mm f5.6. They are way more physically manageable and far easier to focus.

It's basically a telescope that's somewhat easier to use with a camera. Also compared to a fast 110mm refractor the price is quite a lot more affordable. I should really hook a focuser and an eyepiece to it sometime and see how it fares as a regular telescope.
