photos from my mfa exhibition, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩, at ewing gallery, knoxville, tn.

my sculptures are composed through slow accumulation—thousands of small parts held in tension, tracing a process of continual becoming.

setting out to locate something real—so much belief in doubt—impossible to hold as a conviction in your heart—traded for an embrace of mystery— taking things that are and turning them into what they could be—the greatest workings of magic are the little things that are done piece by piece everyday

guess we can take it back to the beginning—10 years ago—work for my college thesis—tools made of wood—that's it—just old poplar most of it—from a building that was being torn down in cincy

things in progress—complicated relationship with the landscape—the pristine—preserved in the photograph—inaccessible—reduced to pixels—resolution—distance and closeness—reconcile

spending long hours at the drill press—with tremendous help from assistants —and godzilla—wrapping wood blocks with images on vinyl—in this process the rigid is woven together and becomes fluid—valuing the emptiness btw pieces for its potential to contain—an abyss black as the inside of your skull

cutting up photos + actual bits of the landscape—as an act of mending—of alchemy—dissolving the binary—btw pixel + particle—btw online + offline, btw ruin + repair—borrowing scenery—bringing the landscape out of the background—flexible—a prescribed rest—a stillness—the immaterial—immaterial again
