Eighteen-year-old Danny Nolasco died last summer working construction in the scorching Texas heat. He wasn’t the only one. As Texas continues to block heat safety labor protections, advocates call for a national standard.
Texas Workers Keep Dying in the Heat - Inside Climate News
Despite its blazing temperatures, Texas has no labor protections for heat. That leaves workers, especially immigrants, vulnerable on the job.

Seeing dozens of these including in upstate NY. Not all ties but races decided by 10s of votes. We all remember the one vote for one seat in VA a few years ago that flipped the entire trajectory of its policies. Your👏vote👏matters👏

Most especially in races where everyone pre-assumes the outcome
Every vote counts—literally. This week in Nevada, two tied candidates drew cards to determine the winner of their local race. 🏆

Do you think your vote won’t make a difference? Think again. Democracy only works when all of us participate.
Winner takes all: Nevada election tie settled by high-card draw showdown
A tied election between friends in Nevada was decided by a high-card draw Wednesday for a local office in the small town of Gerlach, four hours north of Reno.

If we’re talking governors, Virginia is as much a “blue” state as Kansas is a “red” state. Kentucky, Georgia, NC, and Kansas should be much better studied for their fed/statewide office differences in voting and how perception plays a role.

In light of the stunning size of the blue wave, I’m also thinking of all the important races that Dems left on the table by not running a candidate:
Now 8 days to go before the deadline fully passes for local candidates to run in Virginia — and there still only are Republican candidates running for sheriff in the state's two biggest cities, as sheriffs ramp up their cooperation with ICE and federal immigration authorities.

Background:
“It Blows My Mind That There’s No Opposition”: When ICE Allies Run Unchallenged - Bolts
In a populous city in southeast Virginia, a Republican sheriff who calls himself “Detain ’Em Dave” faces a race to the right against a GOP challenger who wants more immigration enforcement. No Democra...

Will be looking at turnout everywhere, but the split tickets - including those that voted top of ticket and left other races blank - will warrant extensive analysis after tonight. Margin differences look significant - ~5%

The amount of times over the years that I shared a cultural or political story from Teen Vogue with others who responded with surprise at the level of reporting or that no one else was covering a topic is many. Big loss for journalism and readers everywhere.

Earlier this month, the International Union for Conservation of Nature reported that the global population of green turtles has increased nearly 30 percent since the 1970s, thanks to a suite of international actions aimed at saving the animals.
After Decades of Protections, Green Sea Turtles Have Been Saved From the Brink of Extinction—for Now - Inside Climate News
Scientists caution fisheries and climate change still threaten the animals. Sustained conservation efforts must continue so the turtles can continue to recover, they say.

The Netherlands seems about to have its first gay Prime Minister.

D66 Party has the most seats in today's election exit poll.

Its 38-year-old out gay leader Rob Jetten said tonight: "millions of the Dutch people have turned a page today (and) said goodbye to the politics of negativity and hate”.

Mayors and mayors-elect should all take a cue. Being seen living the change by biking or taking transit in your own city = massive #ClimateInfluence . When YOU do it, it seems possible to constituents. #cities #cities4climate

There are two races for governor this fall—in New Jersey and Virginia. But don’t sleep on lower-profile statewide elections: the contests for attorney general and lieutenant governor in Virginia, plus critical elections in Pennsylvania and Georgia.

Four contests have come to largely define the 2025 elections: the elections to lead New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City, plus California’s redistricting measure. But there’s so much else... Read More

Interesting thread this morning. My experience with AMI has often been just trying to get whole building data available between tenants and landlords for both residential and commercial properties, a fundamental step in addressing the split incentive.
Want to reduce electricity bills 20% by 2030?

Release the data! We have over 37GW of batteries, water heaters, etc that can participate in demand flexibilty. But without data access they can't bid into the PJM/MISO capacity auction to bring down costs.
Smart meters were all the rage in 2009 (aka Advanced Metering Infrastructure, AMI) and even then most of us knew they were unlikely to bring any real benefits for residential customers. Little did we know that Utilities using rickety Oracle and SAP systems would create a crisis. 🧵

And some of y’all still out here thinking your vote doesn’t count. It does in all races, but especially local and state ones often decided with low turnout in the thinnest of margins. Doesn’t matter what party an incumbent is or what party your area “typically” goes with.
LEAD CHANGE: Barbara Drummond is back ahead.

By one vote. One single vote.

21,565 to 21,564.

And FOX10 has gone from saying 97% reporting to 85% reporting, so not done yet.

a reminder that Bolts has a monthly guide to local & state elections that matter most, for instance this is this month's (lots left this Tuesday and in 10 days): boltsmag.org/whats-on-the...

and stay tuned for our BIG GUIDE to the fall, with dozens of races we're working on.
Friendly reminder to keep up with your state/local elections! Those are just as important as national ones, because those laws will affect you faster and more significantly than others.

Project 2025/MAGA aims to give a lot of power back to the states, so that’s where you should also be focused! 🙂
