I was trying to. But opportunities are extremely scarce compared to PhD positions. I got answers like: "I do not have funding for an internship, but if you want to do a PhD..." Once you have a good offer, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bushes.

Interesting! But taking the four countries and calling it European production is a bit biased. Within the same time frame, many car factories have been build in the Eastern part of the EU.

I just wrote the opposite to what you suggest I claim: "It is clear that reforestation is NOT a fix to fossil fuel emissions, by no means. No carbon storage will help if we do not stop emissions. No questioning that."

And just as with agriculture (which has huge contribution to climate change), there is a cost to the intensive management of forests, monoculture practices, clear-cutting. And we have the knowledge and technology to do better (e.g. continuous cover mentioned by OP). /2
