Lucian reached a hand down. Cain fit the cigarette between Lucian’s index and middle fingers. Lucian tasted whiskey when he took a hit. He let the smoke settle in his insides before pushing it out through his nose. “You’re worried about her,” he said. His voice was taught as he bit back a cough. Cain’s smile was mirthless. “I don’t know what I’ll do if Mother gets ahold of her,” he said. “If everything we did means nothing.”

The house had two eyes, a gaping maw, and several rows of crooked teeth. Bitterbrush eared either side of its hulking blue body. Out front, a blue spruce stood sentry, and eighty feet around in a neat, near-perfect circle were pine trees. A dozen of which were marked with yellow ribbons. I recalled vaguely the realtor mentioning beetle infestations infiltrating trees. They needed to be culled.

Haru’s mother was a fine mess of dry cleaned clothes. She wore silk scarves and woke up before the sun to do her hair. Her nails, always manicured, always colored, painted invisible lines over Haru’s skin. She would run those sleek, glossy nails over his cheeks and his arms, and it would raise gooseflesh all over his body. His mother did not drink. “That is a man’s activity,” she would say, her teeth clicking together. “You’ll be a man one day, Haru. You too will lick the salt off your beer can; you will subsist on beer nuts and cheap booze.” And then her touch would leave him, cold, empty. But he remembered the nails and the maps they left behind.

Cain dragged on his cigarette, which he only smoked when he was drunk or watching horror films. “Why?” he said. “We’re fucking religious icons. Or didn’t you hear? Our sister has Awakened.” More than heard, Lucian felt it. It was like a dangerous tilting of his bones. Like every sinewy or calcified thing inside of him clenched and bent. His thoughts drifted to Emilia and he yanked them back, barking.

I remember my grandpa only in brief flashes. Sometimes I would catch a whiff of him in the cologne my mother spritzed to the inside of her wrists, like a dusting of nostalgia. I used to play dominoes in the foyer of his house in Houston and bowl them down with marbles. He taught me how to make pancakes with flour, baking powder, sugar, and let me crack a dozen eggs until I dumped a whole yolk into the mixing bowl sans eggshell. We fished triangles of eggshell bits from my failed attempts and scrambled eggs in bacon grease. Those breakfasts were spiritual.
