I starting writing a little bio for another app & ran out of room. Instead of wasting good energy and writing, I will use it as a little reintroduction thread here!
You may know me as KT, Karen(she/her; identity first language) or @NeurodiversityInPrincipal on that other app where so many of us met.

I have completely lost patience with deficit/medical model language in describing autistic traits. Why can't the language be neutral? Why can't we describe eye contact as "inconsistent" rather than "poor"?

Less than two days later, I’m sad to say that this piece is already outdated. The amount of damage that Secretary Kennedy is inflicting on autistic people and families is abhorrent.

A fellow educator witnessed a colleague stop a child from stimming—basic hand stimming. They held the child’s hands still to do this! The stimming was completely safe. No reason for alarm, no reason to stop them except the adult’s need to exert compliance to neuronormativity. This needs to STOP!

Alt text should be as long as it needs to be in order to effectively describe the content. In some cases, this will be a few phrases. In other cases, it will take a few more sentences. Aim to be as efficient as possible without leaving out key details.

Sure sounds like an #AutisticGlimmer. I think #AutisticJoy is subjectively experienced. Like when a mycophile discovers the perfection of a new mushroom or an aquaphile comes across a sparking river or waterfall (think Mel Baggs’ In My Language) or when a rock hound sees something like this:

Tan: The involvement of autistic people with high support needs in participatory research is still lagging.

We need to shift the power redistribution in research to underrepresented groups, including multiply marginalized autistic people, autistic young ppl, & autistic people with HSNs.
