Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble

There are a lot of big questions at play here, but the most fundamental might be: what is the point of college?

Look, I'm just gonna tell cishet white people right now--Newsom ain't the one. You got Walz and Pritzker out here. You do not need a Bill Clinton clone wearing Mitt Romney's skin.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

This is why strategies that focus exclusively on material conditions (or protecting democratic institutions) often fail to break through. People have to be convinced that they do not deserve oppression and neither does anyone else.

If there is a beginning point to unraveling this, I think it lies in not assuming you can just ~discourse~ your way to getting ppl to have the scales fall from their eyes & vote how they "should" & I think that a large part of "how do we fix politics rn" operates from that fallacious belief.

One thing that really stands out here is the role land acquisition plays in causing delays and driving up costs. We saw the same thing with the CA HSR project.

Seems to me one of the key drivers of delay and cost overruns for transit is catering to neighbors.
This fall, King County Metro quietly delivered a report laying out the laundry list of reasons that RapidRide corridor upgrades suffer yearslong delays.

It comes at a very uncertain time for the overall RapidRide program, with only two projects in planning.

We have to talk about how this glorification of overwork is driving care downstream.

To compete, men are incentivized to dump care onto women in their families. And women in privileged positions are then incentivized to push care onto others more vulnerable than them.

Historians are trained to see feudalism through the lens of power imbalances. But what if it's simply that the (expected) return from owning land and having peasants farm it is greater than the amount you allow those peasants to keep?
Sociologists are trained to see everything through the lens of power imbalances. But what if it's simply that the marginal (expected) return from outside labor is greater than the marginal cost of the foregone domestic work?

"in all fairness—" no, you don't need to be fair to people who aren't arguing fairly. you don't need to treat their bullshit as credible or worth engaging at face value
The reason this is effective is that a lot of people are genuinely committed to knowing the difference between right and wrong and want to do the right thing. Sophistry tells them their ability to discern right from wrong is inadequate; it tells them to distrust their own moral compass.
