The WHO and the EU also have processes for figuring out which strains to include in the annual flu vaccines, which the US could borrow from. The significant here is that the US govt is signaling to flu manufacturers that it is not interested in a seasonal flu vaccine.

HHMI paid my way through graduate school too. It made a huge difference in my life. it makes me really sad to hear this news and to think of all the people who aren't going to get to share the experience with HHMI that I had.
