Growing up the son of a jail and prison chaplain provided me a perspective of the world (and approach to it) that was… unique. I’m grateful for it and consistently intrigued by the stereotypes that follow me, as they did him.
For 12 consecutive seasons, we’ve cheered Olathe South’s Cross Country team as each of our 3 kids have competed. All of us have been caught in the slipstream of the effort.

How many times have you heard someone ask rhetorically, “Who’s to know what the truth is? Who’s to say?” At best it’s a convenient escape hatch. At worst, a manipulative tool. When you hear “Who's to know, who's to say?" answer "I am!" Not from pride but from love of what is real.

The survival of just one person from the plane crash in India is so unfathomable it makes other aeronautical mishap survivals seem normal by comparison.

Small town Kansas - Big time courage and speed! Bennington High’s Manny McVay sacrifices himself for 4x100 team championship.

You only get one shot. Manny McVay took advantage. He would have to lean for his 4x100 team to get the championship. He did… and he fell, he popped up with the win… and a compound fracture. Photo credits: (Top right, Jesse Bruner photos; right middle, McVay family; bottom right, Sports in Kansas.)

“Find what you love and let it kill you” is a message that resonates with many… but is it a myth? And to those who embrace it as a mantra, does its roots even matter?

This is an origin story that’s consumed me. It speaks to how we live our lives and how romanticism leaves off the ugly endings.

A new exhibit now stands in the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Honor— a tribute to Jim Tyrer.

This is what class and courage look like.

The Chiefs didn’t have to do this. But they did — because they knew Jim and Martha. More than a tribute. It’s a statement.

Today would have been Jim Tyrer’s 86th birthday.
This past year, for the first time in 44 years, he was a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame — allowing the world to get a glimpse of who he truly was. A person whose legacy was far greater than the worst moment of his life.

Pro Football Hall of Fame denies entry to controversial Chiefs player Jim Tyrer
Although his on-field accomplishments made him unquestionably qualified for induction, Jim Tyrer was a controversial nomination from the start — because he killed his wife and himself in 1980. Advocat...

Been sitting with this. 🤔 The sole argument against Jim Tyrer in PFHOF debates concerned morality. But the irony is that the very thing that allows us to reason morally—the prefrontal cortex—is one of the first things destroyed by CTE.

Wrap your head around that.

What a missed opportunity

Statement from the family of Jim and Martha Tyrer regarding Pro Football Hall of Fame vote

This story was meant to be told for so many reasons. www.kppllc.net/beneath-the-...

It's now public knowledge (ESPN) that at least 2 #PFHOF voters openly broke HOF rules in an effort to block Jim Tyrer's induction into the Hall... based on those voters insistence on being arbiters of morality. Let that sink in as you watch this.

We await the vote outcome.

Bad things happen that aren’t the product of bad people. Chris Nowinski, CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation says the Jim and Martha Tyrer case is one such example. Still there are those who insist on overlooking the facts of the case…
