If you're wondering how this will go Square Enix handed off their mobile Octopath game to NetEase who immediately started using ChatGPT to translate everything resulting in text like this. When players complained they started asking fans to fix their translations in exchange for in-game currency

Farewell New York!

I’ll miss all the anime fans, but I won’t miss the smell of garbage saturating the air!

I still can’t get over the hilarity of Inoue Kikuko going around and mothering people as a giant mantis-like bug monster in this show.

Just being a good mama bug and tenderly giving out lots of head pats with her vicious scythe arms lol

Many translators fear and lament what will be lost as their work gets automated. Many were never in it for the money, but for love of the work—of translating games, prose and art. They worry AI-generated output stands to flatten and collapse culture itself, our very ability to understand each other.

Unlike as in the first installment in AI Killed My Job, which looked at tech workers, some of these stories are truly harrowing. Workers in their 40s, 50s, even 60s, who now have to think about how they're going to survive, while their peers are retiring. Some are despairing.

Some translators I spoke to said their freelance work is down 90%. Others said it's dried up completely. Others say it's only a matter of time, and are looking into new careers. One games company that had translators on staff said they could stay—if they took a 50% pay cut.

Many translators paint a picture of how, despite there being no revolutionary advance in automating translation, the floor began to fall out from the industry around 2023. OpenAI, it seemed, made 'good enough' translations acceptable, and demand for quality work evaporated.

More precisely, this is how corporate clients, managers, and executives who've been sold on the power of AI by Silicon Valley, have used AI as a way to drive down wages, demand higher volume, and deskill work.

I spoke to dozens of translators who've been impacted, and many tell similar stories.

my mom has been a freelance translator for almost my entire life and has seen her income essentially disappear in the last two years despite, as this piece notes, no meaningful improvements in the tech. the world has just decided translation isn't something you pay for anymore, basically
Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

Some days I feel like my passion for... well, anything... is just fading away drop by drop.

Maybe it's the lack of sleep. Maybe it's burnout. Maybe it's not being able to share them with others as much anymore. Maybe all of that.

Or maybe it's also the GDBS I can't talk about.

I'm so fucking terrified right now that the senile, racist traffic cone is actually going to claim the presidency and legitimately ban pornography and make me and all my good, honest coworkers into felons with a single stroke of a pen.

Why do people vote for him? It's not sane.

Started re-watching Hazbin Hotel last night. Gods, the music in that series is stupidly catchy and I love it so much.

Yeah, Mom, I understand you're not retired and can't help watch the baby every day like my grandmother did for you - so you could go back to work.

But is it seriously that much of an imposition to ask for you to help take care of your grandson once a week?

I swear, most days now, I just don’t understand how other parents manage at all.

Trying to take care of a baby as the full-time caregiver AND work a full time job feels impossible.

I'm sure my ADD isn't helping at all, but I swear I have no idea how people manage to focus on work enough to get things done when both working from home and trying to be the primary caregiver for an infant.

Babies just need so much, all the time, and cry if they don't get it...
