Its a new term and a lot of us are preparing their lectures. I am a huge fan of online ways of teaching. And my student Joey Rudoler @jrudoler.bsky.social made a great online stats course. Shiny app and all. Modern take on stats. Thought some of you may appreciate.

Every generation has been richer for a long time and, yet, people feel we live in worse times than the past. Are you all believing the future will tank? Mostly because of AI? Difference academia vs industry? Are my friends just drawn non-randomly?

Apparently people appreciate highly focused talks. I will do my best to comply in the future. 1 talk, 1 idea it is. Its a bit hard for us older folks as we probably have accumulated many ideas.

The transmitter post on embracing complexity in brains (through AI) just came out. I love embracing complexity. But I fear we have not yet figured out what we should do in this new complex space.

Also, read the last para here - we explicitly say that it is. physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

I don't get it. Your paper explicitly seems to say that you interpret FC as evidence for actual causality. And the last author literally wrote an article called "Combining Multiple Functional Connectivity Methods to Improve Causal Inferences." Am I really reading this all wrong?

I think I really do not see the predictions of IIT. And I see the example given in the paper as the result of a logical fallacy - using IIT as a tool to classify patients does not at all shed light on patients being conscious. This kind of statement is exactly what drew the ire of the IIT concerned.

Ok being more charitable in reading, the list of parallels is simply not great.

Z-curve analysis is a great way of looking at the effects of publication bias and p-hacking. Community for Rigor built you a fun little simulator (sorry for slow load, pyodide). Can you try it and let us know if it is useful/ informative for you?

I guess its true that somewhere on openneuro relevant alternative datasets must be. But this is what openneuro looks like :(. Like basically for outsiders, openneuro seems inscrutable. Choosing "derivative" reveals only 5 somewhat atypical datasets.

Pretty brutal if true. That being said, I don't think I am. I have often seen papers for which my statement is true. And I am willing to make it more precise. I believe that if a committee rated, across papers, my statement and tested UMAP existence, then correlation would be positive.

I guess the question of the day is what to call this when done professionally.
