I hide and dont answer the door. But in the UK, holy crap people would drop by for a chat all the time. After a while, I just stopped caring that they thought I wasn't "house proud" (2 kids under 4) and added whiskey to our tea. This was very early 2000s in rural County Durham.

Sames. Ya can't go back once your eyes are opened to the world. Small towns stay small, even when they grow beyond recognition. All friends Ive stayed in touch with have moved on. Those who stayed frankly peaked in hs.
