I’ve said this before but white guilt is useless. I don’t want people to feel guilty for things they had no part in, and guilt easily curdles into resentment. But everyone regardless should feel an obligation to correct injustice, especially if you somehow benefit. bsky.app/profile/mich...
I found this piece sad too, but mostly because it is part of a years-long effort by progressives to understand what "really" animates Trump voters.

We already know! It is racism, misogyny and misinformation. I know that sounds condescending or whatever but it's simply what all evidence suggests.

One of the defining feelings in American life, for decades now, is elites doing plainly criminal shit and nothing at all happening as a result. It is deranging in a way that virtually nothing else is. Media fixates on perceived street lawlessness but shit like this matters much more in my opinion.

the democratic party's bias to normalcy is gonna kill us off.

the gop is literally talking about a military junta and the democratic leader is operating like he can just cut a deal with republicans like its normal times.

I got a flu booster today and it made me reflect on the sense of national accomplishment I felt when I drove to a public facility, waited in my car until my number was called on an app, and got my first covid jab. It's fucked the right gets to erase what a moment of technological liberation that was

the US profoundly needs a children's rights movement. children are not property... they deserve opportunity and learning and autonomy and security.... and our country just does not acknowledge this

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.

Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

There is only one possible ending to this story, and sports aren't the last chapter. I guarantee that if you haven't lost five decades of rights in two weeks, you have no idea what this feels like, so I'm begging you: protect trans kids right now with everything you've got.

people come up with all kinds of fanciful math to justify billionaires' wealth but imo present political moment demonstrates conclusively that we need to tax billionaires at whatever rate will keep them focused on their own fucking business rather than our Medicaid and pediatric cancer research

overton window has shifted and there simply isn’t a “moderate” position to take that will get us out of here. Do you want a functioning democracy or not? If yes, the only options available to achieve that are radical ones
People have had their head in the sand on this for my entire adult life and if you're scared of things like court reform because you see yourself as a sensible Moderate I regret to inform you that court reform IS THE MODERATE SOLUTION and always has been. You don't want to hear the real solution.

This is a great post from a great thread about the current fissure in the Democratic Party, and why it IS best understood as an intra-party split.
Young people reject that approach to politics. So, increasingly, do older Democrats and liberals. The thing that people like Schumer, Clyburn, Jeffries, and Gillibrand don’t get is that Dem voters are deeply angry at where we are at; they just didn’t blame Dem leaders. Until recently.

Conservative protests are always treated as an organic cry of anger that manifests the distress of the unjustly ignored American heartland; protests from the center-left are always written off as noise from inside the bubble.
The Tea Party protests in April 2009 had about a third of a million people involved, and the political media treated it like a game changer for the Obama presidency.

The No Kings rallies were AT LEAST ten times bigger than the Tea Party protests. Will the press keep pretending Trump is popular?
Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
