Capitalism didn't give us the internet.

Large-scale cooperation, open protocols, and free software gave us the internet. Capitalism gave us mobile sites that don't work because fifteen ads cover the screen.

No immigrant has taken your job. You were laid off by a capitalist who required cheap labor and took advantage of that immigrant to increase his profits, and nothing makes him happier than to hear you blame the immigrant and not him.

Every time a student sends their art history professor an email saying, "I was in X museum and saw that work we discussed in class!" a puppy smiles, angels sing, and a double rainbow irradiates the horizon.

This is it, I think: Wikipedia is the fruit of conscientious, imaginative humans working for decades. AI is a couple of nanoseconds of pattern recognition pulled out a virtual arse. Wikipedia is free, AI has subscription tiers. Wikipedia is the opposite of AI - it's good, free, and works.
I do genuinely wonder how many people think what happened with Wikipedia is that “society accepted it” rather than that they put a ton of work into making it reliable, something that is not going to make AI reliable because no technology to actually understand meaning has been or can be invented.
Some of the anti-AI stuff feels a bit like when people would say "don't use Wikipedia as a source." It's just like anything else, a piece of information that you weigh against multiple sources and your own understanding of its likely failure modes

FFS, those of us who have been sounding the alarm aren't just luddites. The problem is LLMs DO NOT "UNDERSTAND" ANYTHING.

LLMs are statistical MODELS OF LANGUAGE. They are not "reading" what you write any more than autocomplete does.

Hallucinations are BAKED INTO THE TECH.

Larry David skewers Bill Maher here.

"1Two hours later, the dinner was over, and the Führer escorted me to the door. “I am so glad to have met you. I hope I’m no longer the monster you thought I was.” “I must say, mein Führer, I’m so thankful I came. Although we disagree on many issues, ..."

Larry David writing a NYT guest essay as a man having dinner with Hitler, just to roast Bill Maher as a smug, self-important clown, is the stuff of comedy legend.
