"Children who read, and are read to, do better at school. Actually, I don't care about them doing better at school, though others will. What I care about is the climate of the mind, the leap into suggestions of good and bad, of moral imperatives, of social possibilities, of other worlds."
'The writer of a children’s book has license to abandon time and place, to create, to propose alternatives.'

As we look toward the Children’s Booker Prize, Penelope Lively reflects on why children’s books matter.

Why children’s books matter
Children’s fiction has the power to suggest an alternative way of being. We need it now more than ever

As a kidlit author and a Canadian, inspiration doesn't get much better than this www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Moose set loose in Interior B.C. with the help of a Canadian flag | CBC News
On a sleepy fall morning in the quiet woods of Interior B.C., a young moose trapped inside a paddock was led to freedom by an animal lover and a Canadian flag.

This book was a delightful discovery in a street library, and a perfect reference resource for this morning's Connections game! Also watched migrating sandpipers and dunlin on the mudflats today- I nominate "choreography" as the collective noun for them. Wonderful wordy, birdy, nerdy day!

Today I learned that the science behind PCR tests originated from research on bacteria in hot springs. And flat screen TV technology built on chemicals isolated from carrots. What a wonderful wild planet! And some pretty amazing science too.

❤️ let children find their voices. And books are a good place to look.....
Thank you to attendees Liza for allowing me to share this photo of her notebook from my session, The Creative Storm, which I delivered at the BCTLA fall conference. I love this extremely human encapsulation of my presentation!

This is hibernation season for me and I just had my idea of a perfect weekend: creative writing and critique group on Saturday, wet and muddy Sunday morning planting with volunteer stewardship group at local park, then curling up and reading for the rest of the day. Anyone else happily hibernating?

A paper in Nature Communication reports on a new method to produce strong, biodegradable plastic from bamboo. The bioplastic resembles oil-based plastics in strength, shapeability, and thermal stability but can biodegrade in soil within 50 days. go.nature.com/4h1xv0X 🧪

Heartwarming - and heartbreaking - article about a truly great story teller.

Coming in March 2026: Flowers! When flowers appeared, nothing was ever the same. They are the world’s great collaborators and creators. Writing this book transformed how I see life’s history and future. Cooperation, beauty, and illusion transform the world. Can't wait to share these stories

Fast fun way to gain insight and empathy with children learning to track text. Reading is learned and it's a critical skill.
Today’s reading exercise.

Inspiring and emotional night at the Coast Mental Health Courage to Come Back Awards. I was especially inspired by David Chalk's story of learning to read at the age of 62. He really means it when he says reading can change your life.
