This is why a Marxist analysis should always be slightly stretched when it comes to addressing the colonial issue. In the colonies the foreigner imposed himself using his cannons and machines. Despite the success of his pacification, in spite of his appropria-tion, the colonist always remains a foreigner. It is not the facto-ries, the estates, or the bank account which primarily characterize the "ruling class." The ruling species is first and foremost the outsider from elsewhere, different from the indigenous popula-tion, "the others." Rachel Held Evans Van Dyke also stated it dramatically: "When the Abolitionist tells me that slaveholding is sin, in the simplicity of my faith in the Holy Scriptures, I point him to this sacred record, and tell him, in all candor, as my text does, that his teaching blasphemes the name of God and His doctrine." As you can see, Christians advocating for the preservation of slavery did not characterize their abolitionist opponents as simply disagreeing with them on the interpretation of the biblical text, but instead tended to accuse them of not taking the Bible seriously at all. Christians on both sides, but especially the pro-slavery side, urged followers to simply abide by the "plain meaning" of biblical texts and not allow complicated, nuanced argumentation to cloud their mind. Rachel Held Evans Obviously, this way of looking at things was highly influenced by Enlightenment confidence and its marriage to Christianity, which Noll is quick to point out manifested itself in arguments from both sides. But the fact of the matter is, the pro-slavery side had more going for it in the way of proof texts. Slavery apologists could cite passages like Genesis 17:2, Deuteronomy 20:10-11, 1 Corinthians 7:21, Ephesians 6:1-5, Colossians 3:18-25; 4:1, and I Timothy 6:1-2 to support their case. They pointed out that slavery was practiced by the people of Israel and regulated by God, and that Jesus never said a word against slaveholding. Even the apostle Paul instructs an escaped slave, Onesimus, to return to his master, they observed. [Notably, many of the texts in question are the exact same texts-the Household Codes of Ephesians, Colossians, and 1 Peter-that are used today to support gender hierarchy in the home. I touched on this important connection in my post about submission in context and in A Year of Biblical Womanhood.] Rachel Held Evans Noll explains that abolitionists had a far more challenging task, for they had to appeal instead to the "broad sweep of Scripture" and to generalities regarding justice, love, and common humanity. As abolitionist Gerrit Smith put it, "the religion taught by Jesus is not a letter but a life." Noll points to an 1845 public debate between Nathaniel Rice (pro-slavery) and Jonathan Blanchard (anti-slavery) which lasted for eight hours a day, for four days! Rice "methodically tied Blanchard in knots over how to interpret the proslavery implications of specific texts" while "Blanchard returned repeatedly to 'the broad principle of common equity and common sense' that he found in Scripture, to 'the general principles of the Bible' and 'the whole scope of the Bible'" rather than specifics. Many Bible-believing Christians, including those who were uncomfortable with slavery, just weren't buying the abolitionist argument that placed the "spirit of the law" over the "letter of the law." As Connecticut Congregationalist Leonard Bacon put it: "The evidence that there were both slaves and masters of slaves in churches founded and directed by the apostles, cannot be got rid of without resorting to methods of interpretation that will get rid of everything." As Noll observes: "On the eve of the Civil War, interpretations of the Bible that made the most sense to the broadest public were those that incorporated the defining experiences of America into the hermeneutics used for interpreting what the infallible text actually meant. In this effort, those who like James Henley Thornwell defended the legitimacy of slavery in the Bible had the easiest task. The procedure, which by 1860 had been repeated countless times, was uncomplicated. First, open the Scriptures and read, at say Leviticus 25:45, or, even better, at 1 Corinthians 7:20-21. Second, decide for yourself what these passages mean. Don't wait!”

But where journalists and commentators are failing us, particularly in the legacy media, is in their refusal to push past their Christian supremacist biases enough to take these political actions seriously as Christianity. Not as a perversion of Christianity, but as one very real and powerful broad expression of the faith with deep historical roots that's been present in one form or another at least since the fourth century, when Christianity became deeply entangled with Roman imperial power. This is the Christianity of divine authority and violent apocalyptic "justice"; of Christ as ruler; of European colonialism and American white supremacy. And this Christianity is not a less authentic form of the faith than turn-the-other-cheek Christianity just because we may find it less congenial. As I've argued many times, the dismissal of authoritarian Christianity as "fake" Christianity only serves to reinforce Christian hegemony by perpetuating the equation of "Christian" with "good" in the common imaginary, an equation we don't make for members of any other religious or non-religious demographic. For example, Muslims are often demonized, and atheists face social stigma in vast swaths of the United States. It is important to note, however, that sometimes commentators refer to an undifferentiated "religion" or "religious values," which may come across as (and indeed may be) an effort to be inclusive; under conditions of Christian hegemony, however, this essentially reduces to a vague Christianity. In equating "Christian" with "good," commentators elide the real issue— that Christian supremacy and privilege are every bit as real as white and male privilege, for example, and are part of the unjust social hierarchies that need to be dismantled in order for equity to be achieved in our society. The absence of an effective government prompted two influential politicians, Franz von Papen and Alfred Hugenberg, along with several other industrialists and businessmen, to write a letter to Hindenburg. The signers urged Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as leader of a government "independent from parliamentary parties", which could turn into a movement that would "enrapture millions of people". (1591|160] Hindenburg reluctantly agreed to appoint Hitler as chancellor after two further parliamentary elections—in July and November 1932—had not resulted in the formation of a majority government. Hitler headed a short-lived coalition government formed by the Nazi Party (which had the most seats in the Reichstag) and Hugenberg's party, the German National People's Party (DNVP). On 30 January 1933, the new cabinet was sworn in during a brief ceremony in Hindenburg's office. The Nazi Party gained three posts: Hitler was named chancellor, Wilhelm Frick Minister of the Interior, and Hermann Göring Minister of the Interior for Prussia. 161] Hitler had insisted on the ministerial positions as a way to gain control over the police in much of Germany. [162] 27 February 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire. Göring blamed a communist plot, as the Dutch communist Marinus van der Lubbe was found in incriminating circumstances inside the burning building. 1631 Until the 1960s, some historians, including William L. Shirer and Alan Bullock, thought the Nazi Party was responsible; 164][165) now the view of most historians is van der Lubbe started the fire alone. (166] At Hitler's urging, Hindenburg responded by signing the Reichstag Fire Decree of 28 February, drafted by the Nazis, which suspended basic rights and allowed detention without trial. The decree was permitted under Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, which gave the president the power to take emergency measures to protect public safety and order. 167) Activities of the German Communist Party (KPD) were suppressed, and 4,000 KPD members were arrested. (168] In addition to political campaigning, the Nazi Party engaged in paramilitary violence and the spread of anti-communist propaganda, in the days preceding the election. On election day, 6 March 1933, the Nazi's share of the vote increased to 44%, and the party acquired the largest number of seats in parliament. Hitler's party failed to secure an absolute majority, necessitating another coalition with the DNVP. (169] On 21 March 1933, the new Reichstag was constituted with an opening ceremony at the Garrison Church in Potsdam. This "Day of Potsdam" was held to demonstrate unity between the Nazi movement and the old Prussian elite and military. Hitler appeared in a morning coat and humbly greeted Hindenburg. (170/171] To achieve full political control despite not having an absolute majority in parliament, Hitler's government brought the Ermächtigungsgesetz (Enabling Act) to a vote in the newly elected Reichstag. The Act-officially titled the Gesetz zur Behebung der Not von Volk und Reich ("Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich") -gave Hitler's cabinet the power to enact laws without the consent of the Reichstag for four years. These laws could (with certain exceptions) deviate from the constitution. (172] Since it would affect the constitution, the Enabling Act required a two-thirds majority to pass. Leaving nothing to chance, the Nazis used the provisions of the Reichstag Fire Decree to arrest all 81 Communist deputies (in spite of their virulent campaign against the party, the Nazis had allowed the KPD to contest the election) (173) and prevent several Social Democrats from attending. (174) On 23 March 1933, the Reichstag assembled at the Kroll Opera House under turbulent circumstances. Ranks of SA men served as guards inside the building, while large groups outside, opposing the proposed legislation, shouted slogans and threats towards the arriving members of parliament. (175] After Hitler verbally promised Centre party leader Ludwig Kaas that Hindenburg would retain his power of veto, Kaas announced the Centre Party would support the Enabling Act. The Act was passed by a vote of 444-94, with all parties except the Social Democrats voting in favour. The Enabling Act, along with the Reichstag Fire Decree, transformed Hitler's government into a de facto legal dictatorship. [176]

In 1921, newly elected president Warren G. Harding chose Mellon as his Secretary of the Treasury. Mellon would remain in office until 1932, serving under Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, all three of whom were members of the Republican Party. Mellon sought to reform federal taxation in the aftermath of World War I. He argued cutting tax rates on top earners would generate more tax revenue for the government, " but otherwise left in place a progressive income tax. Some of Mellon's proposals were enacted by the Revenue Act of 1921 and the Revenue Act of 1924, but it was not until the passage of the Revenue Act of 1926 that the "Mellon plan" was fully realized. He also presided over a reduction in the national debt, which dropped substantially in the 1920s. Mellon's influence in state and national politics reached its zenith during Coolidge's presidency. Journalist William Allen White noted that "so completely did Andrew Mellon dominate the White House in the days when the Coolidge administration was at its zenith that it would be fair to call the administration the reign of Coolidge and Mellon." Mellon's national reputation collapsed following the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the onset of the Great Depression. He participated in various efforts by the Hoover administration to revive the economy and maintain the international economic order, but opposed direct government intervention in the economy. After Congress began impeachment proceedings against Mellon, President Hoover shifted Mellon to the position of United States ambassador to the United Kingdom. Mellon returned to private life after Hoover's defeat in the 1932 presidential election by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Beginning in 1933, the federal government launched a tax fraud investigation on Mellon, leading to a high-profile case that ended with Mellon's estate paying significant sums to settle the matter. Shortly before his death, in 1937, Mellon helped establish the National Gallery of Art. In a letter to parents after the incident, the school's principal said: "I am writing to provide information on an incident that occurred last night on school property. At approximately 7 p.m., school administration received an alert that an individual on school grounds may have been in possession of a weapon. The Department of School Safety and Security quickly reviewed and canceled the initial alert after confirming there was no weapon. I contacted our school resource officer (SRO) and reported the matter to him, and he contacted the local precinct for additional support. Police officers responded to the school, searched the individual and quickly confirmed that they were not in possession of any weapons. In a letter to parents after the incident, the school's principal said: "I am writing to provide information on an incident that occurred last night on school property. At approximately 7 p.m., school administration received an alert that an individual on school grounds may have been in possession of a weapon. The Department of School Safety and Security quickly reviewed and canceled the initial alert after confirming there was no weapon. I contacted our school resource officer (SRO) and reported the matter to him, and he contacted the local precinct for additional support. Police officers responded to the school, searched the individual and quickly confirmed that they were not in possession of any weapons. The revolutionary rhetoric and force deployed by the Founding Fathers offered black abolitionists an opportunity to present themselves as equal men whose struggle mirrored that of American rev-olutionaries. Inadvertently, the Founding Fathers supplied the language and ideology for black abolitionists to rationalize a violent overthrow of slavery. Meanwhile, Haitian revolutionaries provided the precedent. The successful overthrow of slavery during the Haitian Revolution supplied the first example of a black revolutionary victory achieved through violence? For black aboli-tionists, an independent Haiti represented the impossible made possible. The Haitian Revo-lution, and the slave rebellions more generally, served to illustrate the fact that political violence was a direct and inevitable consequence of slavery and oppression. Black abolitionists Frederick Douglas recognized that the years of moral suasion had failed to reach the masses, by appealing only to the elite in society. He claimed that the voice of reason would not influence the masses, but that what was required was the force of events. He added, 'the American public discovered and accepted more truth in our four years of Civil War than they learned in forty years of peace! He believed the that without the threat and aid of violence, American slavery could easily have persisted for another hundred years. By early 1917, Russia was on the verge of total collapse of morale. An estimated 1.7 million Russian soldiers were killed in World War I.(137) The sense of failure and imminent disaster was everywhere. The army had taken 15 million men from the farms and food prices had soared. An egg cost four times what it had in 1914, butter five times as much. The severe winter dealt the railways, overburdened by emergency shipments of coal and supplies, a crippling blow. (135) Russia entered the war with 20,000 locomotives; by 1917, 9,000 were in service, while the number of serviceable railway wagons had dwindled from half a million to 170,000. In February 1917, 1,200 locomotives burst their boilers and nearly 60,000 wagons were immobilized. In Petrograd, supplies of flour and fuel had all but disappeared. (135) War-time prohibition of alcohol was enacted by Nicholas to boost patriotism and productivity, but instead damaged the funding of the war, due to the treasury now being deprived of alcohol taxes. (138) On 23 February 1917 in Petrograd, a combination of very severe cold weather and acute food shortages caused people to break into shops and bakeries to get bread and other necessities. In the streets, red banners appeared and the crowds chanted "Down with the German woman! Down with Protopopov! Down with the war! Down with the Tsar!"[135]

The amount of harassment and hate spewed at these women is staggering.

I have so much gratitude for the consciousness building that Black women and men did for White America over the last decade, and I never want them to have to go this alone again.
The work of digging for and calling out these Twitter accounts takes a grim psychological toll. Crockett said that, at some point, therapy might be a good idea after years of being subjected to violent harassment, of receiving death threats, and of the humdrum indignities that black women face on the internet every day. "Not going to lie, alcohol helps too," she laughed. In the years since #YourSliplsShowing began, Crockett, Hudson, and others have continued to sound the alarm about the campaigns of disinformation targeting women of color. Every so often, the two will compare notes on suspicious users in their mentions. Hudson recently began to spend some of her time writing fiction; Crockett is training as a doula. She also spoke at a journalism conference in December, connecting #YourSliplsShowing to other historical black information networks: "kitchen tables, hair salons, you know, after-church services. These sort of intimate, intercommunal services, where, as they say, 'spill the tea.'"

It's impossible to say how many of the fake accounts that #YourSliplsShowing called out were actually part of the Russian propaganda operation that may have helped tilt the 2016 election. But what does seem clear is that the misinformation, bot networks, and weaponized trolls that Twitter did little to curb back in 2014 were a "dry run" for the presidential campaign two years later. In 2018, a New Knowledge report commissioned by the Senate described how Russian agents specifically "focused on developing black audiences and recruiting black Americans as assets," a campaign honed in the depths of 4chan. "It should be validating," Hudson said, to be proved right about what she calls the "toxic white manosphere." "But instead it's been upsetting and alarming. Nobody wants to be right about how much real peril we're all in, even if you saw it coming."
