In the Netherlands, where the Dutch invest in safe cycling, the over-65s cycle around a quarter of their journeys, while the over-80s cycle around 10% of theirs.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle lanes don't 'restrict freedom', they expand it.

U can have a park for the people or park cars. The town of Tulln in Lower Austria made the choice for the people. They turned a concrete desert into a green paradise at the very heart of the city. We need more of these transformations. For families, seniors, teenagers…..
Park statt Parkplatz, Grünoase statt Asphaltwüste: In Tulln wurden mehr als 150 Parkplätze durch einen grünen Park für Menschen ersetzt. Ist viel schöner, verbessert Mikroklima und Lebensqualität. Nachahmenswert! #Klimakrise #Klimawandelanpassung

Off to Leeds later, to speak at the @teammodeshift.bsky.social annual conference tomorrow. Amongst much else, I'll be sharing this graph, based on our 2025 paper.

Almost everybody thinks it's important to be able to travel without a car, but they underestimate how much everyone else agrees

The latest National Travel Survey clearly questions that old myth about "Active travel is just for the middle classes, what about working people who have to drive?"

A good counter point to victim blaming rhetoric is noting that the best cyclists in the world get hit by drivers. It's not about skill; it's about lack of infrastructure and dangerous drivers (yes, even in the Netherlands). This happened in broad daylight too.

I clicked this story expecting "resident pressure" to mean people wailing about parking spaces. But bless the people of Porthcawl, who actually demanded less commercial development and more walking and cycling routes
Porthcawl seafront plans scaled back after resident pressure

Bridgend County Borough Council has unveiled a reshaped masterplan for Porthcawl’s seafront, confirming that several elements have been changed following strong feedback from residents.

Our new report shows cities like Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds are far less dense than peers in France and Japan — holding back growth 👇

As winter flooding looms, it's worth noting that a young street tree in an asphalt surface can prevent 60% of the rain that falls on it from reaching the ground, even when not in leaf.

Increasing the low levels of urban tree cover should be a strategic national priority.

Again I am dying not to drive. I don’t want to drive. If you make spaces for all it gets people like me off the roads and less traffic for the people that want to drive.
Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

😮 A sobering statistic for Road Safety Week... In the UK, SUVs are three times more likely to kill a child under the age of 10 and heavier cars are more likely to be involved in fatal collisions.

Well, it turns out ridehail has no discernible impact on car ownership at all.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?

Do cities with metros have higher transit use? Well, of course, but that doesn't mean the metros cause the transit use, or that no other transit service matters. Amazed that someone can still publish this in an academic journal in 2025 ... 1/

I raised this with City of Ottawa staff last year. This kind of triple-use infrastructure (power generation + shade structure + heat island mitigation) is the kind of innovation that various levels of government should collaborate on to make it feasible.
“Starting at the end of November this year, public parking lots with more than 80 spaces will be required to install solar power generation facilities. This applies not only to newly constructed parking lots but also to existing ones.”
