I still love patchwork, I still hate custard and I still make a mean toffee apple. History, sleep support and who knows what else besides, all in beautiful East Lothian.

“Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.

Thank you all, the update than we can barely believe we get to make.

To everyone who supported us through this last month, we couldn’t have even come close to this outcome without you all.

Have a peaceful festive period, we’ll see you in the bookshop soon 🧡

Rubbish photo but that's a tree sparrow on the left (chestnut head, pale neck collar) and a more familiar male house sparrow on the right (grey head, no neck collar). Once you know the difference it jumps out at you, but I wonder how many people miss this quite handsome little bird?

This Protestant work ethic garbage from the government makes me want to scream. A human’s worth is not derived from a willingness to be exploited by capitalists. There is nothing noble or good about being drained of thousands of hours of one’s life so rich people can get richer.

In S17 of #Taskmaster, Nick Mohammed dressed as a vampire for his tasks. The production scrubbed all his reflections when he's dressed like this, but the only way I knew is because someone told me about it. It's subtle and very cool.

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

"Of the 991 history exam questions set in 2023, 357 featured a named individual, but only 31 were women – and nine of those were references to Elizabeth I or her reign."

Dr Natasha R. Hodgson of Nottingham Trent University writes this week in The Conversation bit.ly/49ZqTiq
Women are still absent from how history is taught and assessed in England
Over a third of GCSE, AS and A-level exam papers in 2023 made no mention of women at all.

There's a difference between instruction and an education. I see a lot of people trapped in the idea that we're just 'instructing' children and young people. The EYFS statutory framework makes it clear that education is about care, learning and development. Worth remembering for other phases too.

this Girlguiding thing is so miserable. and so emblematic of the bigot playbook. a poisonous minority of mindless, soul rotted cultists intimidating decent people - who far outnumber them - because they have the backing of Big Transphobe. and for what? to make life miserable for a defenceless few
