“The core of the problem is simple: Too much money chasing too few homes.

In 2025, America built fewer homes per 100,000 people than it did in 2005, 1995, 1985 or 1975. If you wanted to encapsulate the entire problem in a single chart, here it is:

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

I think that one of the things going on here is that a lot of powerful media figures think the admin, Rufo, Bannon etc share the same kind of low-intensity racist views they do ("affirmative action has gone too far") and can't recognize them as the full-blown fascist fantasists they are

this is right, I feel like. Fascism is a terrorizing philosophy; to concede it anything -- success, competence, a future -- is to not just surrender to it but to serve its purpose.

the only thing i'd add to this is that mainstream political media is very much taken with the idea that trump is some incarnation of the national spirit. it shows up everywhere and is used to explain his political success.
people are mad about this but it's just on-its-face true. trump won the popular vote and because of a few decades of the media priming people to believe that only conservatives can truly represent The People, that popular vote victory was treated as a defacto enabling act
Society generally has recognized him as the embodiment of the will of the Volk in a way that transcends and supercedes the Constitution
