On this day in 2024, Murray Sinclair died.
Born in 1951 in Selkirk, Manitoba, he served as chair of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He was Chancellor of Queen's University and a Canadian Senator.

I’ve been studying genealogy methods and practice so I could gain skills to search for information about my great-grandmother who was sent to a residential school in Fort Totten, ND in 1894. I’ve learned one thing: searching for European ancestors is different than looking for Indigenous ones./1

Want to learn more about the treaties where you live or visit?

Websites such as Whose.Land and Native-Land.ca are excellent resources for learning about local treaties and for helping you craft an authentic land acknowledgment or welcome.

I think the key problem here is a continuing assumption, in traditional media, that when the White House speaks on a major topic, this is a big news story.

That model can't cope with a president with no regard for truth, who's in constant broadcast mode, & who veers around from one day to another.
Why are the American president's claims about autism the first item on British news bulletins?

He's not our president, the advice doesn't apply here and he's not presented any evidence to support his assertions.

So why spread these claims? What make this the biggest story in the UK?

Next Tuesday is Truth and Reconciliation Day. Please check out their website for information on how to learn more.

And if you want one book to read as a start, check out David A. Robertson’s book 52 Ways to Reconcile. It’s a great resource.

This makes me so sad. I especially loved him as Maximus in Reservation Dogs.

Got this back print from the framer today. “Joy,” by the amazing Christi Belcourt. I hung it in the kitchen so I could see joy every day. Goodness knows, we could use some of that. Art is such a comfort when things are crazy.

I’m reading Maggie Siggins’s biography of Louis Riel. I got to p. 97, where an Edouard Marion is mentioned. I knew I had an ancestor named Edouard Marion, and I checked. Yep, there he was, born in St. Boniface in 1834. He would have been about the right age to be the Marion in Siggins’s book
