Stranger Things 4

First rewatch since 2022!

Season 4 is incredible. More mature, gruesome, and epic than any previous season. I actually think I like it even more than my first viewing. I remember the Russia plot not quite hitting in 2022, but on a rewatch I think every storyline totally delivers.

Billy is incredible this season. Dacre Montgomery did a good job in S2 but he really impresses here. Robin is a great addition to the show as well. The writers are experts at creating lovable characters.

S3 is a fun Summer vacation season and I love it for that, but I'm also glad it was a one-off.

Stranger Things 3

First rewatch since 2019 and third viewing!

This season is the most different in the whole series. It's aesthetically bright and more colourful thanks to the Summer setting, as opposed to the Fall in S1&2. It's also way more comedic, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

Stranger Things 2

First rewatch since 2017 and third rewatch! Same as Season 1.

Season 2 really gives a lot of time to Will, which is great after he was barely in last season. Fantastic performance. It was also nice that Dustin and Lucas had more to do, and Max was (and still is) a great addition.

Shelby Oaks

Had a good time seeing Chris Stuckmann’s directorial debut! It’s a horror film that isn’t doing anything particularly groundbreaking but what it does do, it does well. Definitely worth seeing in a theatre environment. No poster up though so I took a photo of the title card at the end!

The Spectacular Spider-Man

First rewatch of what is still the best Spider-Man TV show. Both seasons nail so much of what makes this character great, from the quips to the action to the villains and more. It honours classic storylines while keeping them modern and fresh. It really is spectacular!

Get Out

I think the last time I saw this was in theatres in 2017! Just as good now as ever. Peele’s writing is still so fresh and the film strikes a perfect balance between unsettling and comedic. Incredible performance from Daniel Kaluuya as well. It’s obvious why his career skyrocketed from here.

Marvel Zombies

A cool continuation of the zombie episode from What If…?: Season 1. I enjoyed getting more time with characters like Ms. Marvel and Shang-Chi who have been criminally underused, but ultimately this just doesn’t feel that impactful or like it has anything to say. Fun for fans though.

Stranger Things

Very happy to be rewatching this. Last time I did was in 2017. 8 years later I’m back for my third watch of Season 1.

It’s basically perfect. The whole cast is on point. Hopper’s story especially stands out. Steve’s redemption arc is still peak. Love the VHS style Blu-ray case too!

Luke Cage: Season 1

Mike Colter shines as Luke Cage (just like he did in Jessica Jones) alongside a great cast of friends and foes. Cottonmouth and Mariah were both phenomenal villains, the latter of which being particularly hate-able. Diamondback’s story could’ve been better though. He’s just okay

One Battle After Another

Excellent film with a particularly standout performance from Sean Penn. Saw this projected on 70mm film and it looked incredible throughout. I liked how there’s so much more going on in the background beyond the main plot, but that’s not this story. Makes it feel grounded.

KPop Demon Hunters

Took me a while to watch this one and I ended up having a really good time with it! Great work by Sony Pictures Animation with similar levels of care as they put into Spider-Verse. The soundtrack and performances are great too! Definitely lives up to the hype.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season 2

The story this season started very fun and full of great drama, but the standup comedy scenes were rough in the first few episodes. Luckily they managed to improve that as the season went along and the rest of the show held strong.

Hey Jon, did you notice there are changes in the new version of Galaxy? You can see in these screenshots that the font and grass texture have completely changed from previous versions. First pic is Wii, second is 3D All-Stars, and third is the new one. Could make for an interesting comparison video!

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man: Season 1

After a few attempts, Disney has finally delivered a great Spider-Man show. This is the best Peter and his supporting cast of characters have been in a long time, and everyone is given good stories and motivations. They even often outshine Peter!

X-Men ‘97: Season 1

What a fantastic way to continue the original series with all the modern flair and maturity it deserves! Never could’ve imagined this hitting as hard as it does, and I was shocked by how visceral it could be. Rogue, Gambit, and Magneto were definitely the standouts this season!

Sinners

Third time watching this film and first time at home via 4K Blu-ray. Still as amazing as the first time I watched it. The 70mm and IMAX film source creates a *gorgeous* viewing experience on my OLED TV. Definitely one I’ll be revisiting and would recommend as a must-buy for anyone!

Godzilla Minus One

Never seen anything Godzilla before, nor was I very interested, but after hearing amazing things about Minus One for a couple years I decided to grab it on sale. Pleased to say it was great! Solid performances from likeable characters, and impressive VFX from a very small team.

Eyes of Wakanda

A surprisingly interesting animated anthology! Episode 1 was good but didn’t blow me away, episode 2 was just okay, but episodes 3 and 4 were really cool and made this series worth the watch. Very beautiful art direction. I’d be down for more random animated projects like this!

Fant4stic

I watched this once on a plane and thought the first half was a pretty good setup, but once they get their powers nothing interesting happens. I’m sorry to say that my opinion hasn’t changed. It just becomes incredibly boring and lacks any momentum. The movie ends and you feel nothing.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

I remembered a lot less of this movie compared to the first. I feel mostly the same about them though. It’s got a lot of bad, especially anything to do with the wedding, but ultimately I still had a good time. Bit lower on it than the first but not much!

Fantastic Four

I probably haven’t seen this movie in 15+ years, and I’m pleasantly surprised to say that I had a really good time with it. Is it great? No. Is the script weak? Yes. Is the score forgettable? Also yes. But the effects actually haven’t aged that bad and it’s just a lot of fun.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Finally a genuinely good FF movie! The cast have great chemistry and were very well selected for their roles. The retro-future world is brilliantly designed, and the cosmic visuals were a really incredible sight to see. Giacchino absolutely cooked with the score too!

I love just browsing random Alex Ross work and finding complete masterpieces like this. Never seen this cover before but damn!

Ironheart

This took a few episodes to get going but had me totally hooked for the latter two thirds of the show. Interesting exploration of grief. It caught me off guard how heavily it delves into magic as I expected more of a tech focus, but it leaves me very interested in what’s next for Riri.
