🗃️ Anti-Chinese restrictionists, invoking prohibition of slavery under the 13th Amendment (1865) produced the following twisted syllogism: 1. "Coolies" were slaves [which they were not]; all Chinese laborers were "coolies" [which they were not]. 3. Therefore, they should be excluded from the US.
February 19, 2025 at 2:21 PM
🗃️ In the 1870s and 1880s, restrictionists falsely characterized all Chinese laborers as unfree “coolies” and, using a distorted antislavery logic, called for their exclusion from the United States. See "The Problem of Immigration in a Slaveholding Republic" (OUP, 2023).🧵4/4

🗃️February 19, 1862: Congress passed the Coolie Trade Prohibition Act outlawing involvement by US vessels in the transportation of unfree Chinese workers to foreign ports—an important but indirect step on the road to Chinese Exclusion. 🧵1/4 @bethlewwilliams.bsky.social @unlawfulentries.bsky.social
