🗃️ Anti-Chinese restrictionists, invoking prohibition of slavery under the 13th Amendment (1865) produced the following twisted syllogism: 1. "Coolies" were slaves [which they were not]; all Chinese laborers were "coolies" [which they were not]. 3. Therefore, they should be excluded from the US.

🗃️ In the 1870s and 1880s, restrictionists falsely characterized all Chinese laborers as unfree “coolies” and, using a distorted antislavery logic, called for their exclusion from the United States. See "The Problem of Immigration in a Slaveholding Republic" (OUP, 2023).🧵4/4
