In 2022 I originally started my PhD proposal by describing Georgia as a progressive state on human rights. But now, as I’m writing a chapter framing it as semi-authoritarian, I’m thinking that by the time I finish my dissertation, I might actually end up calling it a dictatorship.

For more than 340 days, Georgian women have stood in the streets fearless, determined, and unbroken.
They are fighting for democracy, equality, human rights, and a European future against a corrupt and immoral government.

Sad, shameful and worrying moment for Georgia 🇬🇪

Mzia Amaghlobeli, the first female journalist in Georgia to be jailed on politically motivated charges since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, receives Free Media Award.

Eight political party leaders in Georgia are already in prison, including a witness at The Hague testifying against Russian atrocities committed in Georgia. The ninth appears to have fled abroad to avoid approximately 15-year prison sentence. We expect more names to emerge.

Today, the Circassian diaspora marks the Circassian Day of Mourning. In 1830-1860, 97% of the Circassians were killed or displaced by Russian Empire. While in 2011 Georgia became the first country to recognise these atrocities as genocide, Russia continues to frame it as a mass migration #Circassia
