Sendak had a difficult childhood; many of his relatives were killed in the Holocaust, and he was a sickly boy.

A sickly child, Maurice spent long hours in bed. He entertained himself by reading, drawing, and looking out the window. Comic books and novels like Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were his companions. At age 12, Maurice went with his family to see Fantasia, Disney’s classic animated film. He was mesmerized. By the end of the movie, he knew he wanted to be an illustrator. Thinking back to his own childhood, he wrote stories about resilience and facing fears. His stories had emotional honesty, passion, and humor, and his artwork was fanciful and sometimes dark. “Children are tough, though we tend to think of them as fragile. They have to be tough. Childhood is not easy,” said Maurice. “We sentimentalize children, but they know what’s real and what’s not.”
