We know that, for a ton of reasons, a lot of folks don't have as much to spend as they'd like this holiday season. Sooooooo, here's a thread of things you can do that will support your local indie bookstore or other business WITHOUT spending any more than you intended...

Federal grant forms don’t use a typical PDF file (it’s a PDF XFA for those who care), making them nearly impossible to fill out and then share for input or approval. While it’s quite low on the list of things I’d like to see the federal government change, I reserve the right to grumble 3-4x a year.

I have the most confusing cold. I feel mainly normal—just slightly fatigued and mentally foggy—most of the time. But every 1.5-2 hours, I spend half an hour incredibly congested, then it clears, I move on, and rinse-and-repeat.

I’ve been a part of this study as a “novid” control participant so far (with my kid in school now, my days feel numbered!). We deserve improved tools for prevention, and people living with long COVID deserve far superior understanding and treatment options than we have today.

These hemlock cones were clutch when we showed up to school this morning and realized we had forgotten about show-and-tell Wednesday.
I’m sure that when most people reach into the pockets of coats they haven’t worn in months, they find tissues, change, maybe receipts.

Me? I apparently have an endless supply of hemlock cones.

Been watching this one for work because too many kids need to wear their jackets and hats indoors at home over the winter. We all deserve adequately warmed or cooled shelter.

There was a group that war gamed out the ‘20 and ‘24 presidential elections and foresaw the likelihood of a Jan. 6th event. Is anyone doing such modeling now? Such as if the federal govt never comes back online to resume and fund all services the way it has after previous shutdowns?

This SNAP Shutoff Comes at the Worst Possible Time
As food prices soar and kids are home for the holidays, families will have more mouths to feed and less money to do it.

There’s been research that shows when you present myth vs. fact, people are more likely to remember the misinformation afterward rather than the truth—AND attribute it to the entity that tried to do the debunking.
My perhaps controversial assessment is that when you share the propaganda of your enemies to call it out or to mock it… you’re still spreading their propaganda and maybe doing exactly what they hope you’ll do.

Trick-or-treating is a decentralized community organizing activity—especially in a town without official hours—so use it as such. All my of neighbors are getting a list of our food pantries and upcoming food drives in town tonight alongside their kids’ candy.

Did you know? The US has one of the highest child poverty rates of OECD countries.

The average child poverty rate across OECD countries is 12.2%

In the US, it’s over 20%

It’s partly why many children rely on SNAP

High rates of child poverty warrant a national conversation.

Been in back-to-back meetings all day which means I’ve had SO MANY opportunities to tell colleagues my kid won’t be anything for Halloween because they’ll be staying home sick for the second year in a row. It’s a real mood killer: 0/10, would not recommend.

Also, this should not need to be said, because "promote the general welfare" def means feeding people, still it's worth noting that food stamps have a huge positive economic impact overall. Every $1 spent on SNAP adds $1.54 to the economy. As is often the case, doing right is also an overall good.
Food bank director: “for every meal that a food bank provides, the SNAP program provides nine. There’s no way we can meet that gap.”

This was sooooo good. Rino is so ethereal, Jia has such great qualities, Rinka was fierce and powerful, and Alysa’s program is one of the best all-time. And Amber! This program is my favorite of hers, too.

With millions at risk of losing SNAP in the coming days, a reminder: hunger doesn't happen in isolation. When food assistance disappears, families use rent money to eat. Then come evictions and homelessness.

Housing, food, healthcare—it's all connected. Cut one thread and the whole thing unravels.

Join us in making noise so we can prevent this devastating manmade crisis hitting families in just 8 days. #ProtectSNAP
⚠️ SNAP benefits do not have to be delayed in November as a result of the government shutdown. More than 1 million people in Massachusetts use SNAP to buy food each month, and families will feel the impact immediately if benefits stop. This crisis is preventable. #ProtectSNAP #SNAPmatters
