Football referee, Newcastle United Supporter. I support the Labour Party.
The other Linesman,Trelford Mills (Barnsley) became public enemy no 1 amongst Newcastle supporters for disallowing 2 goals in highly debatable circumstances leading to losing to Brighton in an FA Cup 3rd Round replay in 1983. Brighton reached the FA Cup Final that season as well.

I knew he was born in South Shields but didn't know he was raised in Scotland. I wonder what his accent was!

A mix of Scottish with a hint of a Yorkshire twang maybe!

He was born the same year as the great Jack Taylor as well - 1930.

Another ref who moved around the Country was Gordon Kew who based in Leeds, Amersham (Buckinghamshire) and in his final season 1976/77 in Middlesbrough. 2/2.

I remember Hutchinson coming to Newcastle a couple of times when he was based in Harrogate. He was Keith Hackett's snr Linesman in the 1981 FA Cup Final. His most famous match of course was the Liverpool V Arsenal match which Arsenal won to win the First Division title in 1989. 1/2

I remember him well - he was an excellent ref. He was a regular at Newcastle during his career. Keith Hackett rated him highly as well. I believe he's still going strong as well, in his late 80s now.

Brilliant old photo!

The incident when Styles was sent off was the most inept commentary I've ever heard! The commentator claimed he would have only been booked if he hadn't have argued with the ref.It was abundantly clear he was arguing because he had been told he was being sent off. @refbooks.bsky.social

Tommy Docherty was also highly critical of Birmingham in his after match interview with Big Match presenter Brian Moore praising the ref for his handling of the match. Ref Homewood was certainly correct to send off Styles for stamping even in those days when refs were much more lenient than today.

They couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery!

Yup it is Keith Styles. I sometimes mix up Ken Burns and John Homewood (a FIFA who was on the League from 1966 until 1979).

The other ref is Jack Taylor from Wolverhampton, a League ref from 1958 until 1977. He refereed the World Cup Final in 1974, the European Cup Final in 1971, in England he refereed the FA Cup Final in 1966 and the League Cup Final in 1976. 2 of 2.

Correct.

Correct - it is indeed Ray Chadwick. He was a regular at Newcastle during his Football League career.

He was also one of only 2 refs to ref both the WC Cup Final and European Championship Final along with Gotfried Dienst from Switzerland. Yet in his era there was loads of better refs than him! Two Italian refs I think we're good enough to ref either tge WC or EC Final were Orsato & Agnolin.

Italy has produced some excellent referees and had a few World Cup Final refs. Mind I reckon the worst WC Final appointment was an Italian - the poor Sergio Gonella in 1978.
