Gen X. Massive fan of the VHS rental days from the late 80s/early 90s. Martial arts films, Sci-Fi, Anime, 80s Action, Sword & Sorcery, Golden Harvest, Cannon Films etc.

Ex-film crew (Audio, Music, Foley). Did some minor stunt work in my short film days.
Secret of the Ooze is a film desperate to be attached to it's prequel, yet too scared to replicate anything that made it great.

Gone were the moody shadows and serious tone, replaced with TV-movie cinematography and childish humour in order to appease angry, entitled parents.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 is one of the few films that not only met my expectations, but vastly surpassed them!

The film plays out like a mini-version of The Warriors with its moody lighting, dark tone, and great trashy NYC sets.

John Du Prez's score is also phenomenal!

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story may be divisive, but I've always found it an exceptionally well made movie with beautiful photography and an incredible score.

The action is fun, but the drama between Bruce & Linda is where the film shines, and it doesn't shy away from the racism of 1960s USA. #FilmSky

Not just another martial arts film. Kickboxer showcased Van Damme's skill as an action choreographer, and the film has great support from Xian, Winston, and a memorable bad guy in Tong Po.

Paul Hertzog's atmospheric music further elevates the film.

A true classic of the VHS rental days! #FilmSky

The Dark Crystal is on my list of "perfect films" along with Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Terminator 2.

It's the epitome of 80s Dark Fantasy. A world so unique and bizarre that it's tangible.

Jim Henson said that being slightly scared was a healthy emotion for children, and he was right.

Double Dragon (1994) was the second game to film adaptation.

I avoided it at the time as I was such a HUGE fan of the arcade game, and while it does significantly change the story, it's cheesy 90s fun.

Special mention for the amazing dystopian matte paintings in the movie. #FilmSky #DoubleDragon

I'm a big retro gamer as well as a film guy, so the 90s were fun.

Super Mario Bros isn't a good film, but I have a lot of affection for it. Bob Hoskins' gruff American Mario is great, and I love Alan Silvestri's score.

It has little to do with the game, but I find it more than watchable. #FilmSky

I can't say more about The Dollars trilogy than what's already been said, so I can only give personal thoughts.

I knew every line from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly when I was 11 in the late 80s. It was my favourite film, and this was before I knew about the Cinephile gush.

Grease 2 is a somewhat overlooked gem.

It's not as iconic as the original, but it's the one I tend to watch the most. The songs are great, Pfeiffer's sass is sparkling, and it has motorbikes - always a plus!

"Cool Rider" may even be the reason I like rock music and play guitar. #FilmSky #Musical

I had this double VHS in the 90s.

The Man The Myth is surprisingly decent. It's like an early version of Dragon from 1993, but HK made. Some genuine location work and solid choreography. The dubbing/editing is rough, and much is fabricated, but for 1976 it's a good attempt.

The Great Outdoors is my favourite film from the late, great John Candy. Lots of laughs, and Dan Aykroyd plays a fantastic bastard in Roman.

Surprised to discover it was a critical and financial flop on release as it was a family favourite for many people.

If you're looking for a nice, sweet film, then I highly recommend "The Boy Who Could Fly" (1986).

A 14 year old girl befriends an autistic boy with a fantastic secret.

Lucy Deakins & Jay Underwood star, with support from a young Fred Savage, and a scene-stealing Fred Gwynne.

Game of Death II:

The first 30 mins is horrendous Brucesploiation with badly reused footage.

It then becomes its own movie, and is a fantastic 70s Kung-Fu film. Kim Tai-Chung is a solid action star, and Yuen Woo- Ping's choreography is amazing!

This should have been Kim's film. #MartialArtsFilm

The Carry On films are somewhat divisive.

As a progressive person, I fully acknowledge that they are dated, sexist, low-brow, and corny. They are also a great slice of their time, and my nostalgia can't help but enjoy them.

Faves are Screaming, Convenience, Cowboy, Kyber, and Girls.

Game of Death (1978) is a film I enjoyed when I was a teen, but watching it again it's just a cash grab.

The spliced-in footage of Lee's face during fights doesn't match, and using shots from Bruce's actual funeral is tasteless.

If there's one film that I completely over-watched as a kid, it's No Retreat No Surrender. I gorged on it so much that I rarely dig it out now, because I still know every line and every shot.

A milestone for me in terms of action choreography, and the UK VHS had a great score! #MartialArtsFilm #VHS

Speaking of #Ninjas, I revisited the Sho Kosugi classic "Revenge of the Ninja".

It's by far the best of the Cannon ninja films! There's a good display of Ninja weapons/assassination techniques, plus the end battle is extensive and well made. The film doesn't hold back on grisly deaths either.

We didn't really have Blockbuster here in the UK until later on. The 80s and early 90s were usually local independent video stores each with their own name.

At that time the big chain here was Ritz, and their stores all had this same layout.
