A few twiddles like a taper on carers allowance might help, but we’re not going to fix social care & nhs, unless we’ve politicians prepared to face up to what’s driven current failure, and the extent to which aspects of nhs care have been rebranded as social, so they can be neglected/privatised

There’s nothing quite like someone speaking to a journalist (off the record), to confidently assert that someone else (or possibly the same someone) DIDN’T speak to a journalist (off the record).

Have we achieved singularity yet? 🤔

To knit together two stories: through intimidation, litigation & extortion, Trump is clearly trying to create a media ecosystem where nobody asks him about Epstein - or indeed anything discomfiting. It is appalling to see so many UK media individuals & institutions aiding & abetting his corruption.

It's the culmination of a series of cool calculations:
1 × 1 = 1
11 × 11 = 121
111 × 111 = 12321
1111 × 1111 = 1234321
11111 × 11111 = 123454321
111111 × 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 × 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 × 11111111 = 123456787654321

Anyone still interested in mortality trends? The latest age standardised update from CMI show that 2025 continues to trend well below 2024, currently around 1.6% of a full year's mortality lower. So barring a sudden and very severe flu season, we should comfortably end the year with a new low.

Famously, Caligula is reported as having considered appointing his horse, Incitatus, to the office of Consul of Rome. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not to be outdone, the US electorate have twice appointed a horse’s ass, to the office of President of America. 🤪

Ah, yes, the <checks notes> “Brexit dividend” just keeps on giving…and by giving, I mean taking. 🙄🤬
I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)
