Claude code, perhaps because of its instructions and execution logic to reduce token usage, declares premature victory. You need to have transparency into its plan so you can interrogate any claim of completeness 🎉. “What about…” Also, check back on the goal. “Does this…”

Lying in bed with flu watching a cozy murder mystery. It ends. I can’t find the remote. Antiques roadshow comes on. Cozy is a fragile crust and I have fallen through. I stare into this abyss. It calls out my name. I am shook.

I created a build script to load my Plan-Do-Check-Act coding cycle as a Claude Skill. This reduces the token use by making the prompts automatically available in claude sessions. You can find it licensed under creative commons here: github.com/kenjudy/pdca...

Invest craft into what you do. Try to achieve some positive impact with it. Be mindful of the harm. Seek out people who do the same regardless of what they do.

An imperfect but achievable path to meaningful work.

Slight nip. Fallen leaves. Gusts whipping the trees. The youngest of trick or treaters foraging stoop to stoop for candy. The sun still bright. Illuminating the clouds. Emitting its promise to shine forever.

There’s a specific aggression/indifference that comes with riding the 4 train. His hand keeps sliding down the pole into my hand. Her hand keeps fidgeting up the pole into my hand. I give up and move my hand to safety, standing there like a flying buttress to the crown heights bound cathedral.

Forgot how expensive gpt-5 reasoning models are. My learning today is don’t let someone stick you with a reasoning model for an agent framework implementation until standard models don’t cut it. langgraph with gpt-5-mini, 30s response. With gpt-4o-mini, 9s response.

In switching to claude code, I've started asking the agent to write out its plan to a markdown file so that it persists. Then when I ask it to do a completeness check we have the same information and I ask it to plan out the gaps it finds as a second change document.

My writeup on my plan-do-check-act amAI coding practice is live on InfoQ.

It works well with plan mode. In fact, it anticipated it.

And retrospection is alive and well!

I provide links to prompts and code metrics github actions.

Our daughter is off to Ireland for a year hopefully to find work and more of her self. The best things - the things you wish for at night before you fall asleep - the things you work decades to make possible - arrive with both joy and sadness. This is life.

I'm sitting in a co-work space working, contemplating life, and listening to Tosca sing out her feelings in Italian.

Guy in train with a full on 19th century brass deep diving helmet. Not going to comiccon as far as I can tell. Love NY

Coding intensely to get in my hours in while making time for my last NY ComicCon with my daughter for a bit as she adults. I can't think of a better soundtrack to the day than Wagner's Ring Cycle.

Why is “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” rolling around in my head this morning? And why do I misremember the lyrics so dark? “You better not go in the woods tonight…” 🎶 🧸🌙😱

Advice? My daughter is moving to the Irish Republic on a visa that allows her to work.

She's a recent graduate of Worcester Polytech in Robotics Engineering. If anyone out there has ideas on where she might look for engineering related work, technical design and drafting, please DM me!

My learning mindset is driven by humility about my depth of understanding, which extends borderlessly into self-reproach. They are an inseparable essence. One gift.

Crossing the entire length of a train station to dispose of my cup in the same shop I purchased the coffee because intruding into a restaurant I haven’t bought something at feels wrong and due to darker moments in recent history there are almost no public trash cans.

My mom’s tradition was to serve unagi (eel) on rice on the hottest day of the year. So, whatever summer day we had it she willed to be the hottest day. Japanese women have that force of will. At least, my mom did.

What’s a more appropriate arrival in Tokyo than making my way from Haneda airport on a crowded train with a stranger falling asleep on my shoulder.

If large language models don’t improve in reasoning, there’s plenty of improvement to be gained in more precise context, additional tooling, reduced computes, increased privacy, local operation, permissively and ethically sourced training data, access, and our fluency using them.

The average US male lives to 75. The average US software developer is under 40 — tailing well off by my age. But I am not average. No human is. While much is out of my control. Some is. So, I strive to keep learning, accomplish interesting things, stay grateful, and embrace hope.

Studying conversational Japanese prior to my hike along the temple trail next month. Forgiving myself for never learning my mother’s native language while she was alive. I didn’t try until I was a teen. She spoke a very formal style, was proud, and I felt shame easily. It all makes sense.

We're letting hype compromise our professional integrity. AI makes devs feel productive, but data shows 10x increase in duplicated code, copy/paste exceeding refactoring for first time ever. I'm proposing a PDCA framework to wrangle AI away from debt generator: agilealliance.org/reducing-ai-...
