Retired software engineer. Dabbles in painting, gardening, community planning, Scottish country dance. Has an opinion on everything.
So, on my desktop, I installed Thunderbird and synced it with my Gmail account. Thunderbird allows you to sort mailboxes bt subject, sender, or pretty much anything.

Every once in a while I open Thunderbird and clear out the junk. Sort by sender and delete things from a specific company, etc.

When I was a kid, the whole world was in black and white, which is why old photos look the way they do. Color was invented by Kodak in the mid 30s to make movies more cheerful.

Survivorship bias. A lot like, "we didn't have seatbelts when I was a kid, and I'm fine." Sure. Because the dead kids aren't here to complain. Similar to the rich, successful person giving a commencement address, saying "do what you love." It ignores all the people who fail miserably.

So, they're suggesting decisions at the White House are being made by a 90 year old with dementia? That does explain a lot.

I think the Republicans have decided that the only enforcement mechanism available to the congress is impeachment. And we now know how impossible it is to successfully remove a president.

This is strictly so the new Arizona congressperson can't be sworn in. She makes up the 218th vote (and deciding factor) to get the Epstein files released.

The residents of Portland should be randomly offering donuts, coffee, and beer to the military who get assigned there. Show them what Portland is really like!

We're to the point where almost everyone boards in the first group and has access to the airport lounge. 🤪

SCOTUS seems to be saying that Congress can fill the purse, but the President doesn't have to spend it all. I assume they believe the president can choose which parts of the spending to fulfill, basically a line-item veto.

Didn't Intel *sell* a 10% stake, not "give"? PBS news says, "...the government purchased 433.3 million primary shares of the stock at $20.47 per share, equaling 9.9%."

This sounds more like the government loaning Intel money to keep them afloat.
September 26, 2025 at 10:56 PM
Have we considered that this is the point of GOP control of the government? They want to make all agencies so unreliable that we'll beg to get rid of them?

On the other hand, fewer customers will lead to declining sales and less office work... 🤪

That's about what I found ON THE CDC WEBSITE: "Provisional data shows about 87,000 drug overdose deaths from October 2023 to September 2024, down from around 114,000 the previous year. This is the fewest overdose deaths in any 12-month period since June 2020."

Right. I'd like more information before we conclude anything about motivation. It just as easily could have been a nihilist or someone looking for civil war. Let's wait and see where the facts take us.

Infrastructure week again? How'd that work last time?
September 11, 2025 at 7:42 PM
The problem with selling cars is that eventually, your company's valuation is driven down to match other car companies. To keep your valuation up in the stratosphere, you need to constantly be shifting to new products and markets. Thus, robots, self driving, and AI.

It's funny, I just read an opinion piece in the NYT by David Brooks ("Why I Am Not A Liberal"), where he makes very clear that it is proven UBI doesn't work. He seems absolutely convinced and even cites studies. Sigh.

Targeted, thoughtful automotive tariffs and policy could actually benefit the auto workers by moving manufacturing jobs back to the US. However, Trump's actions are neither thoughtful nor targeted. Instead, economic slowdown is starting to cut into auto sales.

It's too bad the Maha bunch has chosen to target things that actually save lives. They could have gone after environmental issues that are actually causing harm. Things like plastics, pfas and lead. I also hear new reporting that artificial sweeteners may cause cognitive decline.

I know people like rail better, but is that still true if the bus is free?
September 1, 2025 at 12:19 AM
Light rail is simultaneously great and massively expensive. If you took the construction cost of a rail line (billions of dollars) and put it into buying and operating busses, you could have free bus service over a wide area instead of a single light rail line.

Maybe we need to start a movement of "open carry" of wrapped sandwiches whenever federal law enforcement is around. 😆
August 29, 2025 at 11:46 PM
Maybe we can get them to take on all the jobs that were left open after deporting everyone? Farm workers, construction jobs, whatever. I hear the meat processing plants are looking for cheap labor.
August 27, 2025 at 1:14 AM
Right! These are people with full-time jobs who have been pulled from work to clean trash from the park. You'd think there might be a better way to accomplish the same thing? Duh.

It seems like the obvious quote is:

"Are there no Prisons?" said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. "Are there no workhouses?"
