I’ve been playing Metal Gear Solid on a RetroPie instead of actual PS hardware mostly for save state convenience.

The subversion of Ha Ha You Clowns is in its portrayal of positive masculinity. These characters are all flawed in some fundamental way and they’re just trying to get through it. The way they bumble through it all is the joke.
