My experience, most people care about how the other person is doing strictly to keep score.

Every once in a while, someone finds something out about me, something that surprises them. "Did you...?" Yep. I did that.

"Why the hell didn't you say something?"

Why should I have?

Minor rant. At my previous job, I developed an online information manual, which my bosses liked so much they decided it should be run by its own department. They dedicated a manager to this, asked me to teach her how it all worked... and then hired a bunch of people from outside the company for it.

So... they wear masks to prevent being identified and abused. Which is the reason protestors wear masks. But the protestors are criminals. Not the ice agents committing criminal acts. Not the law enforcement whose job it is to take risks in and with the public. Pfft.
The masked goons from the Department of Child Snatching are the *real* victims here, Mike Johnson says.
MIKE JOHNSON: From the people who mandated mask wearing for years, it's absurd. They need to back off ICE & respect our agents

Q: So you're ok w/agents not identifying themselves when they're arresting migrants?

J: Why, so they can target them? So they can put names and faces online and dox them?

This comes up quite often. After someone- the public, the press- finds something nasty in a bill that congress just passed, a bunch of legislators say that they never saw it, or did not read that section. Just voted for it because leadership said to.

#writing
I have been told that my writing is reminiscent of both Stephen King and Neil Simon. Which, thinking of it, a pretty good genre of its own. "I laughed, but I had nightmares."

We need to accept that, as of now, and probably for a very long time indeed, wars have been nothing _but_ crimes.

If you call for help with a computer or a computer program. two things. First, everyone you speak with will have gone through something similar. No one is judging you for running into trouble. Second, we can alllll see you. 24/7

In some tucked away lab, the scientists working to develop an actual machine intelligence are giggling at what's being referred to as artificial intelligence.

You ain't seen nothin' yet.

At it's closest to Earth it takes about 4 minutes for a signal to reach Mars from Earth.

A conversation would be something like...

ME: I see Paris, I see France...

4 minutes pass while my signal gets there. 4 more pass until the respone reaches me.

MARS: Shut up.

My favourite ever bar was owned and run by a recovering alcoholic. On rare occasions, he would have about a half shot of a new Scotch- so he could write it up for the liquor menu. Never touched anything else. Whiskey, wine, beer- nothing.

When I asked about that level of discipline?

I like them. The standard issue Kents, comics and live action, are movie or TV "types". Tall, craggy. etc. These look my farm country neighbors.
In the excitement of this week’s announcements, it’s fitting to celebrate the anniversary of Ma & Pa Kent. I can’t wait for you to see Pruitt Taylor Vince & Neva Howell as the parents whose moral compass shapes our hero’s journey.

In the trailer, when Lois suggests she interview Clark as Superman, I noticed how their attitudes changed, once they started. Clark straightens up in his chair and sort of expands his shoulders, Lois shifts into a more aggressive pose.

The best response to this is disarmament. Which we are too stupid to realize. Hey! If I use this thing to kill Bob, it kills everyone in Bob's house- do I want to do that?

As a species? Sure.

Just so I am clear? Horoscopes are and always have been bullshit.

#Biden
For the sake of argument, let's agree- just for the moment- that President Biden's decline was worse than the public knew, during his last months in office. That, rather than being a generally healthy older man with the odd lapse?

I do understand the concerns about violence, and about filth and about customers being drivien away. But I think that an actually civil society would find a way to house and employ these people- or get them the care they need.

#baking
Where I live, the Lithuanian Baking Company's star item is their Napolean Torte. Rich, light layers of god knows what, with apricot something or other between them, the whole thing dusted with a lovely, fragile coating of whatever comprises the layers. Tastes amazing slightly chilled.

When pickup trucks started to bloat- getting bigger and fancier, too large to fit in a normal garage- I started doodling and scribbling about this exact truck. Small enough to go anywhere, decent payload capacity and reconfigurable into all sorts of things. Hopefully it does not suck.

@nytpitchbot.bsky.social @nytimes.com Who's the party in charge _now_?
Whether it's Hillary Clinton sharing risotto tips on a private server or Pete Hegseth using the nuclear codes as his password on Pornhub, both parties have ignored our nation's security.

Been thinking about the death penalty- so called. I have a moral objection to it. But as I am not the only person on earth, and not in any sort of political or social authority- I know that I cannot stop it.

So I started to think of better ways to do it- less painful, frightful, punitive.
March 24, 2025 at 8:20 PM
We desparately need a national conversation about prisons. I think everyone will agree that jails and prisons need to be punitive. But I also expect most people would agree that there need to be levels of that.
