With the UCP government invoking the notwithstanding clause to force teachers back to work and a general strike looming, I wanted to re-up a story I reported this summer on the Better Here campaign.

For @prismreports.org, I covered a controversial hydrogen fuel bill in California. It’s sponsored by a hydrogen coalition made up of leading oil and gas companies seeking tax exemptions. Per the DOE, 95% of hydrogen in the US is produced using fossil fuels.

As more journalists are driven out of their jobs, I keep hearing this drumbeat of "it's ok -- they can start their own newsletter or publication." Some can. But becoming your own business is a huge job, and will eliminate many talented reporters from the public sphere. Here's why. (1/5)

An add: If you see journalists doing good work, share their stories, don't just "dunk" on stories you don't like, which also gets more people to read the not-so-good stories.
One of my biggest disappointments in American discourse over the past decade has been the mainstream media.

With very few exceptions, they have failed the American people miserably.

The news media is crowded with people who aren’t here to newsgather. They make no research or investigative contributions; just personalities whose job is comparable to pumping out youtube reaction videos. They’re entertainers, not journalists, and they’re paid 5x what decent reporters pull in.
The political media is obsessively relitigating the issue of Biden being too old and out of touch while the current president babbles incoherently at press conferences and regularly admits he's not the one making decisions on key policy matters.
