You know what tool existed when I was in high school that no one ever taught me how to use? Excel. A thing I use all the time now, mostly self-taught, existed in the late 1990s and no one was upending the curriculum to make sure I knew how to use it.

New York City had free college tuition at all CUNY schools for 130 years
Democratic congressman Tom Suozzi slams Zohran Mamdani as "a bad example" who made "lofty, utopian promises: free public transit, free college tuition, more public housing"

Just to state the stupidly obvious: This is treatment the United States has subjected HUNDREDS of men to without trial or process, the vast majority of whom have no criminal record of any kind. (Not, of course, that it would be acceptable if they did.)
Here’s Abrego Garcia’s amended complaint.

It alleges that Abrego Garcia “was subjected to severe mistreatment upon arrival at CECOT, including but not limited to severe beatings, severe sleep deprivation,
inadequate nutrition, and psychological torture..”

IT'S. NOT. A. BITTER. DISPUTE.

It's a one-sided authoritarian assault on a private institution. What are we doing here, and what is journalism, anyway?
Looks like Harvard could potentially cave to the Trump administration.

And of course, race and diversity would be the first casualty.

Vice President JD Vance: "I empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East. I understand the concern, but the difference is that back then we had dumb presidents"

David Graeber said this in 2012 about protests in New York City.

Though this is increasingly what is happening this week in Los Angeles.

I’ll never get over how, in an era when women’s rights and status are being attacked and eroded in law and culture alike, we were incessantly told that it was boys and men whose suffering we needed to attend to.

It’s bad for society that AI is going to render even “college-educated” people functionally illiterate.

But it’s going to be a boon for those of us who majored in philosophy, literature, or history because we actually like it. The ability to read and analyze a text without AI will seem like magic.

Republicans have been "on the verge of standing up to Trump" for a decade now. Centrist media loves this message but the reality is that Republicans have steadily purged opposition and are more dedicated to him than ever. Who gives a shit what they say in private.
Mark Warner on Republicans: "I do think we're getting close to them stepping up, but the problem is going to be, how much structural damage is going to be done before my Republican friends find their voice and voice publicly what they're already saying privately?"

genuinely one of the most loved apps ever and they're making it a gamified google translate
I have completely deleted my Duolingo. I was informed by one of my kids that the company has removed most of its employees and 70% of the company is run by AI.

I urge everyone to delete their app.
Duolingo CEO says he's getting rid of contract employees and replacing them with AI
Duolingo employees can also expect their AI use to be graded in their performance reviews.

One of my favorite pastimes when the newly-granola, worm-friendly RFK Jr fans speak about processed foods is to ask them, dispassionately and directly, “what’s processed food?”
The ‘ultra-processed food’ panic is pretty clearly just a mix of wishful thinking and classism

empathy is important, people falling down those rabbit holes NEED to know that you their loved ones will be there for them when and if they leave

but empathy must be paired with a hard line. "No I do not believe this. No I will not debate certain things. If you cross this line we no longer talk."
I think this comes from a good place but I disagree. A common thread in deradicalization stories is stigma: Once people start losing friends and jobs they reconsider their beliefs.

Obviously you should try to be nice to people but you also need to draw a line where you won’t engage anymore.
