I don't actually have a proper name for it so it's just SmolSat2 T2 SRB 1st stage sending the apoapsis to ~45km Pug 2nd stage flinging it to ~85km, restocked engine but it'll work with stock parts (terrier swap out) The launched SmolSat2 uses a single RCS thruster to kick the periapsis above the atmo, while no strictly necessary, I hate space junk :3 85kmx85km orbit SmolSat2, with all the bells and booms deployed :3

Liftoff! Though I'm terrible at action shots so you can only barely see the RLV in the background Stage 2 and payload fairing sep. Stage 2 atmospheric burn up after nearly circularizing at 100km. The payload kick stage pushed POLSAT-1 the rest of the way. POLSAT-1 beauty shot except i'm still terrible at screenshots in orbit so it's an ok shot instead

RLV-1 leaving off the shores of the KSC, sporting the aforementioned 2 much larger rockets atop a shockingly over engineered Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) system. While the original RLV only needed one very large hinge to lift up the comparatively light rockets, a system of 6 pistons, 10 hinges, 4 landing legs, 6 grabbing units, 2 docking ports, 1 KAL controller, and enough struts to chain down the kraken are needed here for each rocket. literally just a screenshot I took while recording the 1st video A side view of the RLV-1, showing in much greater detail the complexity of the TEL system required to make (mostly) horizontal storage and (mostly) vertical launch possible. The Slight angle the rockets rest at exists to allow the much larger rear fins to clear the deck, as the additional aerodynamic control is needed to supplement the Solid Rocket 1st stage (SRB for now) A top-down view of the "parked" RLV-1. The air brakes under the water hold it mostly in place, but the modded waves make staying truly still somewhat challenging.

Unless.... Say hello to RLV-1! The Remote Landing Vessel 1 which has no correlations with it's name whatsoever operates as a sea based booster and payload recovery system. A large deck, 4 cranes and seats for 32 kerbals, it makes trips out past the KSC to recover and return spent stages, payloads, and crew capsules around kerbin. After failing to land a test booster on the deck due to a skill issue, landing nearby in the water allowed it to be picked up by the 2 rear cranes for return to the KSC. while slightly less cool than a launch platform, It doesn't make me rip my hair out thinking "why would i ever use this!"

Remote Launch Vessel 1, or RLV-1, was a concept for a sea launched orbital satellite system. Taking inspiration from the Aries 1-X program, the launch vehicle (of which 4 were present) was designed before the vessel took shape, as an incredibly cheap means to launch science and comm sats to LKO from the launch pad. The launch vehicle would be stowed horizontally, and raised to a vertical position when the desired location and direction was achieved. Much like the real life inspiration, Sea Launch, the primary reason for attempting a sea based launch system was versatility, as any nation with a coastline could launch satellites in any direction without risk to life and property. additionally, a highly inclined launch site would be less of a problem, as you could just move closer to the equator for maximum efficiency launches. Being able to launch 4 payloads simultaneously would reduce the cost of and time between launches. And it's off! Launching against waves proved to be a challenge, and none of my test payloads made a perfectly polar orbit due to this difficulty. The budget cuts to the launcher really shine here, as the single SRB 1st stage has a single control surface towards the top to handle balancing out the gravity turn. This was an addition made before I installed Restocked+, a mod that adds thrust vectoring to most of the large SRBs in KSP, making this change somewhat redundant, but charming nonetheless. Unfortunately, the biggest handicap to this system was the launch vehicle and KSP itself. I had neglected to consider that launching with the aid of the rotation of kerbin added a significant amount of deltaV, meaning none of the test rockets (payload pictured) made it to orbit. This combined with the fact i had just installed a mod that adds multiple launch pads, and A lack of utility for a sea launched vessel meant that I basically cancelled the program. Some fun testing was had, and some seas sailed, but for now, RLV-1 is on the shelf of "get a brain wave and come back to it".
