Dad: *nudging me* That should've been you.

Me: not now, Dad.

Dad: Not asking for a clown, are they?

Me: Dad there's a medical emergency happening now.

Dad: Go see if the great clown Pagliacci will help.

Doctor: Cure is simple...

I think it helps to keep in mind that species co-evolved a lot. Eggs started out in the open and softer, then, as predators stumbled upon them being good food, they slowly became harder, better hidden, more protected etc. Predators, in turn, slowly devolped behaviors to mitigate that.
